Hello busybea and welcome to the best forum on the web! ,
in answer to your q's unless you are type1 diabetic ,or have a sympathetic doc' it's likely you'll have to get your own meter and test strips, i use an accu-chek nano meter and bought it myself, when my doc saw i was srious about contrlling my diabetes he relented and now prescribes the strips for me! , i'll tag @daisy1 for the info pack which is for new posters, have a good read and come back and ask as many q's as you like, clive

Hi busybea and welcome

Many of us use the SD Codefree meter, available here...

...because they have the cheapest test strips on the market, and you may need a lot initially.

There is a discount code if you buy 5 or 10 boxes, which brings the price down to about £5 for 50 strips.

Hi busybea. My doctors give them on prescription but I don't use one as doctor says my levels are not that bad

Hi @Gollygolly ,

Your statement has piqued my interest,

By 'doctor', do you mean GP? From the experiences and stories from many forum members it would seem that your GP is unlikely to know much about diabetes. By 'levels' do you mean your hba1c results, what are your numbers?

If you constantly vary between 6 and 8mmol/l then your average is 7. If you constantly vary between 4 and 10 then your average is still 7 but the spikes 'may' still be harming you over time.

Do you have any idea what your blood sugars are before eating and 2hrs after eating?
