Grim Reaper part two

There was a sensible, and sensitive, discussion topic about the pros and cons of being open on the subject of diabetic complications. I'd have thought this was a key issue for debate on this forum. Their was no aggro, and it has disappeared. Did I miss something, or can someone tell me what happened?

No one said the slightest thing contentiousness in that thread. Everyone except Anna said the same thing as far as I could see which was that under the right circumstances being blunt with a diabetic was not a bad thing.

So to repeat myself

I wish my doctor had been blunt with me a few years ago.
 

No Grazer you didn't miss anything. This forum is for helpful fuzzy warm support like that you might get from your dietician or holding kittens. :cry:

The discussing of the cold truth of complications is not viewed here as support even if it is pretty much the confirmed ending for those that don't want to acknowledge and respond to their disease.

We all have it, that's why we're here. Let talk about it.
 
Cigarettes have pictures of nasty black dead lungs, to inform of the dangers of smoking, how come we can't even talk of complications on this, a diabetic forum? It's not like we're asking for pictures of amputated feet to be put on packets of cakes now, is it?

To censor the realities of this disease and stop people being informed of complications that could affect them is more dangerous than possibly upsetting a few people in my opinion.

Just wanted to note that the people that contributed to the orginal Grim Reaper thread have racked up almost 20,000 posts among them (about 7% of all the posts ever to DCUK).

It's a pretty sad state of affairs where a forum deliberately ignores the opinions of some of it's most experienced and active contributors.

Wow, this site is BEYOND a joke lololol. Why are they so afraid of discussion and opinions and debate? Any that I have seen in here have been removed *shakes head* that really is a sorry state of affairs.

There is some weird stuff going on. If there were changes to the rules or the ethos of the forum it would have been polite for us to have been told.

It would appear there are things we can no longer talk about. From what I've worked out we are no longer allowed to mention that diabetics can get complications in case a new member reads it and gets worried. When many posters tried to disagree with that the thread was removed.

Haven't even got a clue if you can now even mention dietary advice based on what happened on this thread http://www.diabetes.co.uk/diabetes-forum/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=34583 Anyone care to guess?

I was online shortly before the thread was pulled.
I was puzzling over the disappearance of my post, started smelling a rat, and realised, after visiting the thread page in another tab, that the whole thread had disappeared.

I took the precaution of saving the last page of the thread. It lacks at least the final post by a mod.

If it's not against forum rules I offer it by PM to anyone who asks. I don't think there's anything to get worked up about. But what do I know ? I'm not an HCP, and I'm not a mod, or admin.

I'd like a copy, please, Geoff. The Grim Reaper thread was so short-lived that I missed it completely - didn't come on the forum until about 16:00 yesterday.

I had a perfectly reasonable paragraph (in my opinion) about complications edited out of one of my posts about diet - "too upsetting". It was almost word-for-word something I've quoted on this forum in the past, and no worse than what my Diabetic Specialist GP snapped at me on diagnosis! She can say it but I can't? Considering how much care I take to make sure my posts are not inflammatory in any way, I was rather mortified to have a post edited for the first time - and then rather angry! Even my literary editor doesn't do that to me without prior discussion.

There is a very fine line between moderation and censorship. Let's not cross it.

The new "rules" about sensitivity and scaring newcomers are very subjective
My real problem with all of this is that I feel that these forums empower people who fail o ge adequate advice from heir HCP's .

Unfortunately many seem to fid themselves in that position as we know by the number of posts received on he subject.

The most proactive of hese people will naurally seek information for hemselves - many on the internet. The best place o find adice a


nd help is from others who have firs -habnd experience of the condiion. Mny have found heir way here .

Recent suggestions to molly coddle new posters are patronising o say the leas.
So they come here o seek advice and are assessed as o heir suitability for receiving i?

Are they in a fit mental state ? Is he information couched in sufficientkly sensitive language etc

Who is qualified o make hese decisions about unknown posters. What gives anyone he righ to judge someone else's finess o receive informaion? Do we want to deny others the information we were able to access withou hindrance?

Yesterday it was confirmed o me hat the only treatment hat prevents me from losing my sigh is no longer available o me as it is now too dangerous in itself. This is not a common occurebnce - I am just inlucky I don' blame anyone for his situation and I am grateful to he NHS for all they have done.
The last hing in the world I would wish o do is to frighten anone in the same position . I am one of a very small percentage of people who do not respond to treeatment . With annual reinal screening many more people are now faced with hospital appoinments etc
Just a referral is enough to terrify people . I and others feel that addressing this issue which many people may experience soon after diagnosis bu which may mean nothing , immediately after diagnosis could prevent a great deal of anxiety later.

Now it appears hat the subject should no nbe menioned at all. Anyone who has reinal screening faces he possibility of it needing clarificaion . This can be mos upseting if not eplained . I know . So anyone who wishes o push this issue under the carpet because it is scaremongering is condemning others o face this on their own without support. I feel very confused.

Just to add to the mollycoddling new members thing (and apologies if it's dragging things up but I've not logged in for a few days):

If people here had mollycoddled me when I joined with my insane blood sugar levels of 28 mmol/L I would NOT be where I am now; which is with blood sugar levels that are consistently under 10mmol/L.
Not perfect by a long shot, but MUCH better and I WOULD NOT have been able to do it without the support and advice of the knowledgeable members here.

If I'd been soothed and given the "there there" type responses I would probably still be in and out of hospital.
So if mollycoddling is the way it's going to go, I'd rather not be a part of it.

I'm urging those that are culling frank, firm and blunt discussions to THINK about the people that exactly those discussions WILL help.
After all, surely that's what this forum is here for, right? To HELP people, to INFORM people and to ADVISE people based on all of our own unique experiences?
 
As a relatively newcomer to the forum, I appreciate any advice on what could happen to me if I do not control my diabetes. I fail to see what the problem is with members posting warnings about this. As a first aider for 40yrs and a prison officer for 25yrs I have seen so many examples of where people either were not aware of the pitfalls or just couldn't be bothered, therefore I fully support the publication of these kind of warnings. During my time as a prison officer I compiled a PowerPoint presentation to try and warn young people against becoming involved in crime and what they could expect if sentenced to prison, some of this was quite explicit but it got the message over and I am proud to say that I turned many youngster back on the right track. It worked because it was direct and to the point and if a Grim Reaper thread on here convinces just one person to straighten up their act and take control or their condition then it is a valid thread and every post in there should remain.
I joined this forum for all kinds of advice, be it blunt and to the point or be it soft and warming advice.
 
I am astounded that this is an issue at all.

I belong to other forums and being blunt about the condition certainly doesn't sound to me like a reason for alarm.

Insulting others and talking down to others, sure, I can see that but sharing honest information? I am shaking my head and not getting it at all.

My brother was diagnosed with D1.5 a number of years ago. He now is living some of those things - no amputations but major neuropathy. If he were given blunt advice when first diagnosed, he might be in a different position now. I can only wish.

I am still shaking my head. I would assume everyone comes here because they want to know.
 
I don't wish to wade into any controversy on my first day here, but I am a newbie and was browsing the forums seeking answers and info.. including about the possible complications (not found much info via official NHS resources so far!).

I just wanted to highlight the comment below, and wish to add that as a newly diagnosed Diabetic (type 2), I for one would very much like to know about the possible complications and what could happen in the future - it might help motivate some of us newbies too!

I would just like to request if someone could please include such info on the forum .. perhaps it need not be images or anything too graphic? or maybe it could be clearly flagged as unsuitable for people of a nervous disposition, or somesuch? Also, if the title is clear, people have th option NOT to read the thread?!

I am sure I can't be the only newly diagnosed diabetic on here who wants to know as much as possible about the disease, the good, the bad and the ugly!?
