Hi all new here, im just about to start my GWO training for work in America on wind turbines, im on 780G insulin pump and wondering if having Type 1 will hinder my chances of getting a job?

Thanks

Hi @Gavlaaa91 and welcome to the forum. I'm sorry I can't answer your question. Have you made any enquiries with the course trainers etc, as they would have more information on this.

Was there a reason you wondered if diabetes would hinder your chances?

Hi @Gavlaaa91 and welcome to the DCUK forums.

I agree with @hopful34 that you should ask your trainers about this? The obvious potential issue to me is what happens if you are climbing a turbine and go hypo???

Some jobs (eg heavy goods vehicle driving in the UK) do have quite hard qualification requirements for insulin users, because of the dangers of going hypo.

Good luck.

Do you already live in the US or are you planning to move there?

Hi mate,

not entirely sure if you’re still seeing this but I figured i’ll post it for others who may be in this position. I got a job last year as a Service Technician with a rather reputable company operating in the offshore industry. Was due to start once my medical had been completed. I went, did my medical. Passed with “flying colours” only issue was, my diabetes. Doctor told me that because I have it I can’t have an unrestricted medical essentially meaning I couldn’t work globally on wind farms because a lot of countries don’t permit for it. North Sea tends to be a safe option and viable but you still need permission from the site client to have a diabetic working on their wind farms. Ended up not being able to do my role which shattered me. Only 24 years old and i’d convinced myself I had achieved my dream. Turns out I didn’t. A lot of the guidelines around T1 offshore is dated back to 2008 via the OEUK medical standards which is absurd. Thought about writing an email to their HR to see where I stand but I figured i’d need a bit of a following or at least multiple individuals to also raise the same concern for it to even be looked at properly. Like looking for unicorn poop trying to find anyone else in the exact same position so i’m not sure what can actually be done about it. Let me know if you’re still about how the blade stuff works with diabetes.

Cheers
