h.o.n.k due to hospital stopping insulin?

my mum has type 2 diabetes and also early onset alzeihmers. the diabetes is being controled with tablets and insulin.

she had to go to hospital las sunday and was nil by mouth (no explanation as they saw a p.e.g. tube in her tummy and assumed she could not eat). during 4 days of not eating she had no insulin and when she began eating and fed through p.e.g she also had no insulin given to her.

mum is only 56 but alzeihmers has effected her communication skills so she couldnt bring it to their attention it was left for me to do.

on returning to her care home 24hrs later she developed h.o.n.k and was semi concious and rushed back to hospital and put on floating scale insulin.

can any experts advise if the stopping the insulin in hospital and her being restarted at her care home with a normal diet has caused h.o.n.k?

i need answers and im not getting them at hospital.

sorry to hear of your Mums disgraceful treatment :(

Diabetes UK also have a care line give them a ring.
You also need to put a complaint in writing to the hospital regarding your Mum's treatment or lack of as the case is. Do not take no for an answer if you have to go to the CE.

i will call tomorrow hopefully to get an explanation

and this will be an additional complaint as mum was fitted with the wrong p.e.g tube a couple of weeks ago and its caused a nock on effect to her returning to hospital

also told they were taken her of insulin today but the nurse then found out its the water the had to stop not the insulin.

all at my mums expense.

My money's on the lack of insulin causing this. For the record, stopping all insulin if not eating is a mistake - T2 patients usually start with basal, and this should have been continued (basal insulin will ideally keep blood sugar in an acceptable range throughout the day whilst not eating).

Did they not do any BG monitoring at all?

yea they done the tests where they pricked her finger, think it was once a day and they where high and low but they advised nothing to concern them. so mums been in since saturday afternoon and no diabetic specialist has been to see her!

just hope she can return to her care home as she was so much happier and healthier there!
 
Well, that shouldn't have happened. NICE quality standards say

People with diabetes admitted to hospital are cared for by appropriately trained staff, provided with access to a specialist diabetes team, and given the choice of self-monitoring and managing their own insulin.

just returned from hospital where i saw my mum have a ten minute seizure. her eyes rolles to the back of her head and she was unresponsive and went limp. still in shock. she is having a brain scan tomorrow and im calling now for her blood results. she resumed concious when i was there but i thought that was the end. do not know what may have caused that as it happened when she was sleeping.
