Had a shock

I have just taken my BG and it was 12.3 two hours after eating small portion of home made chips and fish cake. The thing is I'm per diabetic. Does that mean I'm diabetic now? I'm due for my three monthly blood test as soon as I get an appointment I'm so worried. That is the highest it's ever been.

Hi Maddiemo1

They don;t diagnose diabetes til 2 fasting reads given over 7. My sister is pre-diabetic and she gets some very high reads with certain foods (chnese takeaway) but her pancrease can handle other things much better than mine.

That meal was particularly high in carbs (I'm assuming there was potatoe and breadcrumbs on the fishcakes)

What are your other reads llike - was this just a random high because of the nature of the meal?

To me there's no difference really between pre and diabetic, except a diagnosis/lable/tick on a form - call it what you will, the impact to you is the same - carb intollerent.

Just for the record Mary and Maddie ... I was told very, very casually by my GP over 20 years ago, that I was 'borderline diabetic' and I mean very casually. It was mentioned as an aside when I went to see him about another matter and asked about results of blood tests. He told me there was nothing to worry about and no more was said about it and I was never recalled for further bloods or given any advice. I had no clue back then how serious diabetes was and I already ate what was considered to be a 'healthy diet' ie fresh foods, very little processed and of course I continued to eat carbs. My health has gone downhill since then, very subtly and slowly at first, with random symptoms and I've been diagnosed with several medical conditions, all of which I now believe are a result of the root cause - diabetes. I was only 'officially diagnosed' as a T2 diabetic in early August this year and that's because I insisted on blood tests after a horrendous last 3 years where my health was concerned and I've exhausted myself trying to get doctors to listen to me and to get a proper diagnosis. In all honesty, it's THIS FORUM, NOT THE NHS that has helped me the most.

So you're right - there is no such thing as PRE-DIABETIC - it's only a term the NHS use to describe a person whose blood results fall below their SET CRITERIA. Very important to remember that. The NHS can only begin to treat you when you fall within their SET CRITERIA - but that doesn't mean the condition doesn't yet exist within YOU.
