man newly diagnosed, type 1, had been diagnosed type 2, put on metnorphim, left for 6 wks, lost 3/stone in weight, went back to g.p saw dr he sent him straight to hospital,.... diagnosed as type1, given insulin, twice daily, he do's not no what is happening to him, have advised him to this site... can understand as this is what happened to me.
 
Hi. Mis-diagnosis of T1 as T2 is quite common and it happened to me and others on this forum. Many GPs don't understand about late onset T1 and just assume you are T2. This is dangerous if you don't monitor yourself. I suspect the man had DKA or was on the way to it. This happens when you have high blood sugar and low insulin. The body produces ketones thru fat burning and this together with high blood sugar causes the blood to become acidic. Once on insulin the problem quickly goes away. Your man will need to ajust his insulin over the coming weeks seeking advice from a nurse. After a while he should ask to be moved from twice a day mixed insulin to what is called Basal/Bolus (aka MDI) which gives the best control and is recommended by NICE for T1s.
