I had this. In fact, I actually posted about this a while back. I was only eating one meal a day, although it was a decent variety and all the things that I should eat I started to experience hair loss after 6 months into low carb. I started to eat lunch at least 4 days a week and added just one multi-vitamin tablet a day, now my hair is losing at normal levels and has got thicker again. The multi-vitamin has Biotin in. Perhaps take a multi-vitamin, this seem's to have helped others when they experienced the same.I too am currently experiencing hair loss. I attributed it to the change in diet, dramatic weight loss can also temporarily cause hair to shed much quicker than we would notice normally. I am hoping that once weight loss stabilises my hair will start to regain some thickness.
Hi, thank you for your suggestion, I have recently started taking a vitamin supplement but will check to see if it contains Biotin and if not I will get one that does. I’ve been low carb since Jan and have eaten 3 meals a day but been under 30g per day for most of the time. As an ex hairdresser I was aware that dramatic weight loss can have an impact and I think I am also at that stage in life when hormones are up to all sorts of weird and wonderful tricks! The vitamin suggestion seems to be a possible solution. The loss has been quite alarming and I definitely notice that my hair is thinner, thankfully I have quite a lot of it and also being dark it gives an appearance of thicker fuller hair but it will be good to halt the shedding.I had this. Thank you for taking the time to post your advice about the blood test interference. My DN allowed me to decide when to have my next bloods taken, so long as it’s before end of December. I am about to go on holiday so don’t have time to get done now, so I think I will go on hols and then do bloods when I get back and then I can start on the vitamins.@jayney27 I am in the same boat as you. I try to eat <30g carbs per day and I too noticed hair loss six months after reducing carbs which in the beginning was 100g and gradually reduced down. I have started Solgar Biotin 5000, cheapest price Holland & Barrett. But note @Safi advice re them interfering with blood tests. If I am having bloods done I will stop them a few days beforehand. Will report back. Good luck ladies.
I agree and that’s why I didn’t rush out to buy vitamins or trot off to the doc, as mentioned having been a hairdresser I understand the science of hair and am aware that hormones are the biggest trigger to hair changes and as I’m of a certain age have been coupling my situation with hormone change and weight loss, another fact that I’m already aware of. Having read all these posts and had a quick look at some additional research I am more inclined to think that this is the cause for my situation, my diet although relatively low carb does include a fairly good mix of most of the foods that contain Biotin so I think I will ride it out for a little while longer before doing anything. It isn't always about keto and diabetes, although I think it is usually about hormones (thyroid is a biggie, as mentioned above).
Also menopause and oestrogen/progesterone balance.
In my case my hair was going haywire in my 30s. Dry, crinkly, breaking, falling out. Did some heavy duty reading on it, including a book called 'What your doc doesn't tell you about menopause', which highlighted that the hormonal changes leading into menopause often start in our 30s, not our 40s.
Anyway, eventually I got diagnosed with a benign tumour of the pituitry gland, and been on medication to (partially) block the production of prolactin, ever since. It took about a year after the treatment started for my hair to go back to normal, and it has stayed that way since. Except for the colour change to grey, of course. lol. Been eating low carb and keto for all that time, and not aware that diet or bgs have had an impact.
So I suppose what I am saying is that don't assume it is just keto. Could be a lot of different other stuff going on, some of which just needs a diagnosis and treatment to resolve.
This makes perfect sense to me, I have been telling myself to trust my knowledge about hair growth and natural cycles v dramatic changes to body weight or diet as both result in hair loss and almost always return to normal after a few months.I experienced hair loss, I was alarmed at what I saw! What Sarah says in this segement has proved to be the case for me. Not only is my hair regrowing it is in a better condition now than before dx. The segment is under 2 minutes.
As a matter of interest does your supplement contain significant amount of Biotin?Hi @PenguinMum coming to this a bit late.
My hair is definitely thinner than it was since going Keto. Not coming out in big clumps (which would be difficult given it’s short length), but noticeably thinner. Have been taking a hair, skin and nails supplement which seems to have helped.
