Hi, I'm brand new to this chat. I haven't been diagnosed yet, but I know I have diabetes. I be seen my blood work, my bun creatinine ratio is 40. I have all the symptoms to. I didn't get it naturally. I took mobic and keflex after a bunion removal. My gut couldn't handle it. I see doctor the end of the month. I lost forty percent of my hair with the antibiotics and INSAIDS. It stopped a few months later. It just started shedding again. I'm scared to lose more. I have fine hair naturally, but it was ok because I had alot of it. So I'm going to move out of California to where I used to live. But I can't leave until December. I don't want to show up after five years, half bald from metiform. Do you think five hundred mg a day would mess with it? Thankfully I don't have high blood pressure. I found out my liver is slightly enlarged, and my pee is foamy. From glucose, protein? I don't know. I'm so scard, and my current living situation is awful. That sure isn't helping. My roommate, landlord, is obsessed with me, total control freak. Tells his sister all my business. I don't want him to find out about this. Sorry, you got my whole mess dumped on you. I'm just trying to hang on to my hair until I can get situated. What do you think? 500 a day? To get started?

As you are presumably expecting to be diagnosed as type two, Metformin being the medication normally prescribed in the first instance, could you not request that you try to control your blood glucose with diet first? For some lucky type twos that is all they need in order to have normal numbers.

Thank you, for such a hopeful response. I've been pretty depressed, with literally no one to talk to. I won't even cry living here. I hope I can do it by diet. I'm a good Dieter. I lost 65 pounds, after being on tamoxifin for breast cancer I didn't have. Took five years! The only thing I miss is bread. I have food sensitivities to gluten dairy soy, ever since this mess started. Thanks for the encouraging words!

I’m pre-diabetic, in 2016 I developed a bald patch on the back of my head. It started off the size of a small orange and increased over several months to the size of a melon. I had to work hard to get over the embarrassment of having so little hair on the back of my head, it shone whenever it was windy. I also have very fine hair. It did start to grow back gradually over the next 12 months. At first some of it grew back completely white (I have brown hair). Over this last 6 months it has grown back more.

For other health problems I have been experimenting with a mostly meat based way of eating (beef, with some pork, duck and chicken, plus coyo pure coconut yoghurt - and mct oil). May and June I did really well with the animal based way of eating and I noticed in July that my hair stopped falling out and the first half of August my hair was thicker and the baldness was almost gone. I’ve had a difficult few weeks recently, very hard to eat low carb, eating quite a lot of ice cream and popcorn because other things in life were exhausting me so much, as a result my hair started falling out again.

Now, I’m being more careful with my energy and back to animal based foods, I am hopeful that based on past experience my hair will soon stop falling out again and start to get thicker, growing back more over time.

It is scary when hair just goes like this, I’ve never taken metformin, because my HbA1c has never got high enough, but I did decide to keep working on a low carb way of eating to keep my blood sugar down as well as help with my other health problems. For me it is helping. Not easy, I frequently overdo things and food falls over, but I know it’s my best solution, so I keep persisting.

I hope you find things that help, and especially find support here, this forum is a place of support, lots of people with ideas, or just ears to listen.

I lost a bit of hair at the beginning but I feel this wasn't due to Metformin, it was due to panicking and the stress of diagnosis. Stress comes out clearly in your post, if you do get a diagnosis of Type 2 Diabetes then this will not help your blood glucose levels and to be quite brutal - hair loss should not be a priority.
My hair grew back.

Edited to add.
May I ask what your blood test results were?

Hi and welcome Sorry but are you saying you have been taking metformin even though you have not been diagnosed with diabetes

Hi before I was diagnosed type 2 I lost half my hair and what was left was thin and weak I was advised by a hair dresser to try Nioxin shampoo and conditioner bought it on Amazon. I have used it for just over a year and taken metformin . My blood glucose is now under control and my hair is returning thick and in better condition than post diagnosis . My hair loss was due to very high glucose levels .I know every one has different experiences but this has worked for me.

My urea is 27, my bun creatinine is 40. Everything else is normal except my platelets high 499.

Hi I lost a lot of hair and at the time i blamed Metformin and someone in here pointed out to me, how was my thyroid levels, well at diagnose with diabetes, my thyroid levels were out as well and i also believe the stress of all that could have been the cause of my hair loss. I have since had it cut really short and it appears to be getting a little better. Have you had your thyroid checked because that's a big indicator for hair loss.
