Hair loss

Under 4 might be fine in those symptom-free, but euthyroid tends to be under 1. In your shoes, if I felt fine I'd be content to leave it, wit him symptoms, I might want to tweak up a notch and see how I went at that.

Assuming your assays are similar to one, your T4 is only just in range, and should be closer to the top, but your T3 is in better shape.
Yeah I’m not thrilled about tsh but it might just be because it’s a half thyroid and if t4 and t3 are ok they seem more important. What would you tweak? I’m on no meds at all for thyroid. My ferretin is rubbish so I’m currently trying again to raise that but have failed every time I’ve tried. It just won’t go up and I can’t tolerate the iron tablets I have very well. I’m not anaemic though as hb is 130-140 in this time period so okish
FT4 ref range is 7.7 to 15.1 so that’s why drs think it’s ok. T3 is from 3 tests ago (9 months) not the more recent ones of 3 or 6 months so i think it needs redoing.

Depends on the symptoms and severity, but if you are on straightforward Levothyroxine a small increase could be interesting- even 12.5mcgr. But to be clear, only you and your Doc can decide on that.

A year into treatment I still haven't reached your levels, so it's can take a while (she says through firmly gritted teeth).

Oh apologies. You've done well then, but let's not deflect this thread or I'll have to sanction myself.

Thanks PenquinMum I no longer have a thyroid, had it removed several years ago when Docs thought I had cancer. But am going to look at Vit Bs and the hair wash you mentioned .
The hair wash and conditioner is called NIOXIN not Niotin! Sorry.

Thanks derry60 , Yes think I will be looking at some vitamins, I have never eaten breakfast I was always a coffee person with several cigs when I gave up cigs it changed to biscuits . Plus I am on steroids which make me eat a lot which does not help. I don't think I have been given much guidance from the practice nurse, feel there is so much I don't know .
It all seems a bit daunting at first. Keep looking around the site and you will be fine. People are always here to answer your questions.

I no longer have a thyroid,
Are you having T4 replacement therapy? I had a blood test done today as I've lost about 2/3rds of my previously rather thick mane, as well as all hair on arms and legs and a nice chunk of my eyebrows. Do you still have body hair?

Is that the brand with numbers? So each number is for different hair type?
Sorry for the very long delay in gettng back on his thread. I use no 3 which is for coloured hair and buy it at my hairdressers though it is on Amazon.

They have a lot of Nioxin in TK Maxx at the moment. Unfortunately I’ve not seen No3 yet.

@PenguinMum I got some No 3 (my prescribed one from the questionnaire) in TK Maxx today. It is really nice and my hair looks great. It was half the price there. Thanks for the tip! X

Did you get the shampoo and conditioner?

Yes it was a box containing 3 products. I also bought a separate shampoo as well. But of course it is hit and miss. It wasn’t there 2 days ago. Always pop in just in case!

Thanks for the heads up Flora. Next time in town I will check. You never know what you’ll find in that shop!

Lots of Nioxin in TK Maxx and homesense at the moment @PenguinMum. Boxes if all three products. Went in today and every number available including separate bottles too.

Another common cause of hair loss since this thread started is covid. Many many people have experienced this. Whether it’s because vitamins and minerals are being depleted by the infection (and thus causing deficiencies), sending the thyroid wonky perhaps or a more direct onset of TE in some cases who knows. A quick google search will through up plenty about this.

Don’t forget also that it’s perfectly common to have symptoms caused by deficiencies or less than optimal levels of hormones etc even if they are ”within range“ or “normal”. Lab reference ranges are the bulk of people they see, many of whom are not healthy. Guidance levels avoid the worst effects in most. Not all effects in everyone. Eg vitamin d guidelines were set to avoid rickets. There’s a lot more it’s necessary for than that though that might require higher levels. Always get actual numbers and check if you are at the least optimal end of a range
