Thank you for such an informative reply. I was rushed in to A&E seriously ill, ICU etc So a terrible shock to me and my body .Not type 1 or on insulin but am suffering hair loss due to telogen effluvium (look it up) for the second time in 5 yrs. It’s very common after a big body shock (mental or physical eg emotions or illness or big diet or hormone changes ) so if your type 1 was pretty fast onset of came with a lot of emotional trauma then it’s possibly that. Also it’s incredibly common post covid, even mild cases. Otherwise thyroid (autoimmune comes in groups often) and vitamins and minerals should be checked (iron, ferritin and b12 especially)
Before diagnosis, with extremely high HbA1c and probably 6 months of undiagnosed diabetes, my hair got really thin leaving loads in my hairbrush, but this also coincided (probably again) with the start of peri-menopause (might have all been diabetes side-effects, who knows!), so depending on your age, and assuming you are female, it could be diabetes or other hormone-related - I did find some articles online that pointed towards your body reacting to high BG with some hair loss.
Not a very useful answer, another 'could be, could be something else' response, sorry.
To add though, that now with low BG and Estrogel, my hair is a lot thicker than a year ago.
Hi , thank you for your reply. Hair loss progressivly got worse since diagnosis 3 months ago .. my BG is still not stable . It does help to know I’m not the only one .Before diagnosis, with extremely high HbA1c and probably 6 months of undiagnosed diabetes, my hair got really thin leaving loads in my hairbrush, but this also coincided (probably again) with the start of peri-menopause (might have all been diabetes side-effects, who knows!), so depending on your age, and assuming you are female, it could be diabetes or other hormone-related - I did find some articles online that pointed towards your body reacting to high BG with some hair loss.

Hi, thank you for your reply, I will look into biotin tablets.Hi, I had hair loss for about a year leading up to my T1 diagnosis but like Mrs HJG was/am perimenopausal so it could also have been that. I take high strength biotin tablets now but it definitely started to grow back once I started insulin
If that is your issue the loss typically only lasts 3 to 6 months beginning a few months after the “shock” and your diagnosis would certainly qualify as a shock. No matter what pills and potions you try it will have the same course as without them (obviously that might not be true if the cause is something else). I say only but it feels forever at the time and can be quite distressing. I’ve again lost nearly half my hair. First time from drastically changing diet when diagnosed type 2 and this time from covid. I had less dramatic issues after giving birth to each of my kids many years ago. Keep an eye out in partings and hair line for new growth (it might look like flyaways or broken hair a couple of months after the loss stops. I always see it at my temples first. I’m looking out for it now as the loss has finally stopped and gone back to normal.Thank you for such an informative reply.
