Hello,
I have been on low carbs diet since April this year followed by the diagnose as type 2 in march, and my blood sugar is in much better control. I take medformin 500 x 2 daily with about 30g carbs a day. I am happy with the result. However I keep lossing my hair, there are hair everywhere in bed, shower, bathroom floor and it getting thinner and thinner. Anyone can Help... Please

Ooh there can be lots of reasons for hair loss. If you go to your GP you could get some checked out e.g. thyroid function. Sometimes it can be related to medication. Sometimes it is hereditary. Have women in your family lost hair as they've aged? And is yours being lost mainly from the top of your head? That would point to hereditary female pattern hair loss.

If it is a thyroid problem or medication it may be remedial. If it is hereditary the only treatments are minoxidil solution, hair transplantation or hairpieces.

Sorry it's not great news. I know all this because my hair has lost about 50% on top because I've inherited it from the wrong side of my family! I'm using minoxidil (when I remember).

Thank you for your answer. I have no family history of hair loss. It's all started after I got diagnose and low carbs. Just would like to know if anyone has the same problem. I have got a appointment with consultant for the first time tomorrow actually, I will try to get an answer hopefully. Thanks

Hi Pao wow, sorry to hear of your hair loss, I sympathise and understand as I too suffer from hair loss. As sunspots has said there are no easy answers. I have no older relatives that suffered from hair loss but I do have hypothyroidism and went through the menopause many years ago, so put it down to those. So I initially tried all sorts of things but nothing worked and minoxidil is quite expensive especially as you need to use it for life. I now use a hair thickener called MANE (just google), it obviously thickens my hair and helps to cover up the bits that are missing (I won't even go to the shops without it on). Hope this helps

Hi Pao
Are you on statins? they have side effect of thinning hair or hair loss.

OR stress is a major contributor to hair loss - many diabetics are also under stress.

I would suggest you visit GP to check out other potential causes.

Hello, I'm not on statins. But you might be right. Stress play big part in my life at moment. I actually just came back from the Dead Sea because 2 weeks before I went I suddenly developed psoriasis. It came everywhere on my body and was getting worse and worse day by day due to stress I believe as I was left battling diabetes on my own.
My thyroid blood test came back normal.
But my period stopped since February.( the same time diagnosed diabetes) I'm only 37, slightly young for menaupse So today I took more blood tests to see how are my hormones. At least now I'm booked to see a " moby" consultant. They are going to follow my case, as its not a typical type 2. Very please ! Thank you!
