Hello everyone, thanks for reading this post and giving your time.
I am new to running and was given a last minute space in this years Great North Run. I’ve trained up to 10 miles and have had mixed results from my blood sugars. I would love to hear your advice to help me power my run but also manage my levels.
I wear a Tslim pump and use a Dexcom. I put myself in activity mode over night before I do a long run so that I am not carrying any additional insulin and that I get up at a safe level, around 8. I keep myself in activity mode for my run and I eat a nutrigrain bar and inject for half the carbs about an hour before I run. I have found that I usually spike during the first 3-4 miles (probably due to the half bolus) but then around mile 8 I begin to drop. I want to try gels but I feel like I will spike and then might get too much insulin from my pump. I have seen that Ucan Edge gels are sugar free and use cornstarch to deliver the carbs. This should prevent a spike and slowly deliver the energy. Has anyone used them or has anyone used any good standard gels? Also, when and what do you eat before / during a long run to keep you fuelled?
Does anyone have any advice for carb loading in the 3 days before?
