Halfway to Newcastle

It’s 29th Jan which means I’ve been doing the Newcastle (ish) diet for 4 weeks now.

Weight loss so far is 2 stone, but as almost 7lb of that was in the first 2 days, probably more like 1.5 stone being realistic.

Prior to starting, fasting glucose was between 7.5 and 9.0.
After 1 week levels were <6.0
Since 2 weeks levels have been <=5.0

Exactly as predicted by the study.

The Glucose Tolerance Test I did at my local surgery in mid-December (i.e. before starting diet) was:
Before: 8.9
+2hr: 13.9

I did a home-made GTT test (75g glucose powder in water) this last weekend (day 25) and results were:
Before: 4.9
+1hr: 9.7
+2hr: 6.2
+3hr: 4.8

My understanding is that this would be classified as a “normal” response, so I was really pleased. Will ask GP for another “official” test sometime to confirm this.

However, I’m still on 2 x 500mg Metformin a day. It’s been really helpful for me as an appetite suppressant, but either the effects are wearing off now, or my hunger is increasing.

So the question is, should I stop taking the Metformin now and see what results I get without it? How long does it take for it to clear from your system? Ideally I’d like to complete the 8 week diet as the study shows the full 8 weeks gives the best improvement. Another 4 weeks of weight loss would also bring me to “normal” BMI range, which would be fantastic.

Having said that, I can feel my will power starting to fade a bit, and I’m struggling to do any running with such low energy levels. I was doing the 5:2 fasting diet before being diagnosed with type 2, and consistently lost 1lb a week. I could switch to that to lose the remaining weight.

From previous long term fasting diets I have done, I know that as soon as I start eating again, the hunger monster appears and it’s easy to undo all the good work previously done. But this is going to be a problem whenever I start eating normally again.

Just pondering aloud really, but welcome any thoughts!
