Well after trying to read all I could and get advice. I completely lost the plot a couple of weeks ago got stressed, fed up and angry. As a result I’ve been in denial since.

It’s only been 5 weeks since diagnosis, but for me I think I took it too quickly and didn’t give myself time to adjust. Trying to think of different things for breakfast, lunch and dinner has been doing my head in.

So today I started over with food, and tomorrow I start testing again. Any advice on how I move forward warmly welcomed x

Welcome back @NikkieDuranie. My advice to you is to take one day at a time and record all your test results. Do not try to do everything at once, find a basic set of meals that work for you, then expand them. Find an exercise regime that you can live with and some 'snacks' that you enjoy and get on with your life as if you did not have diabetes.

Hi @NikkieDuranie welcome back, you have taken the first most important step, well done.
Each day is a new day and a chance to start over so take each day as it comes, some will be better than others.
Meal choices will largely depend on what you like to eat and what time you have available, I have listed some of my favourites, they might inspire you, or no, there are lot of options https://www.diabetes.co.uk/forum/posts/1837051/ this thread can be a great place to follow, we post our days menu, I’ve found lots of ideas from others by following it

Omelettes, Keto coconut porridge, very low carb bread toasted with a nut butter, cold meat such as ham with cheese

Salad with either cheese, cold meat, fish either salmon or tuna, mayo or other dressing, homemade cauliflower soup, lo dough made into a wrap or as a pizza base, any of the breakfast ideas also suitable as a lunch

Fat head dough pizza, meat or fish with lots of veg such as cauli, kale or salad, tuna steaks with salads, egg and bacon, burgers with out the bun

As I said these are just some of my go to ideas, I can honestly say I now have so much more variety in my diet, before I used to eat the same breakfast almost everyday, likewise probably only 1of 2 different lunches now I tend to have something different everyday, hope you find a way forward. X

Hi @NikkieDuranie

Agree with the others. Make a simple, achievable plan for the next week or so, then tweak/adjust as you go along. There’s so much information available that it can be difficult to find what’s right for you. The good thing about keeping things simple is that you learn more about what does and doesn’t work than if you try everything at once.

At first I just followed broad principles, no weighing or measuring, just reducing carbs and eating simple meals that were quick to prepare and enjoyable. Then as I learned more from others on here, started trying new things, adding exercise and so on.

You’ll soon find a routine and there’s so much support on here - you’ve done the hardest bit by coming back looking to get on track.

Some of the threads where people log what they’ve eaten or the exercise they’ve done every day can be helpful for motivation and picking up new ideas.

NikkieDuranie - If you're finding all the choosing/decision making to be tough going, then you might consider thinking of, say 3 days meals, shop for them and eat those 3 days meals overer the next,......erm, .... three days.

Once the deicions are made, you don't have to stick to Tuesday = whateverr, you just know you have 9 (or however many) meals worth of food in, and you know you cab make meals from it.

We've always worked this way for a weekly meal plan. It's rare we decide we don't fancy anything on the list. It makes shopping simpler too.

It gets easier, but just that couple of days when you're choosing from from some options, rather than deciding from scratch might just take some pressure off.

Welcome back, everyone here wants to help and support: there's a lot of guidance but you'll see clear consistent threads.
If I may add to advice, don't be disheartened if your first set of readings are higher than you would like - if you've been in denial they might be. Start again and measure progress from here. Well done for coming back.

Thank you so much for this. I will break it down. Maybe spend some time this weekend. To break it down more, so that I don’t get bored. And thank you for your email, you brought me back in x

Thank you very much great advice. Never eaten big meals preferring to snack. So need to find those alternatives. x

Thank you haven’t dared get the machine out again. That’s Wednesday job, I think I’ve done a good job at hiding it in those two weeks as right now don’t know where I put it x

Just a tip. When I first started, I didn't weigh stuff. Turns out I was eating too much. I still weigh out my 30g of peanuts, but if it weighs 32g, I don't sweat it, and I don't put 2g back in the packet!

You will make mistakes. Treat each one as part of your education. Don't beat yourself up.

Welcome back @NikkieDuranie,
Fortunately no leave form needs to be signed so there is no such thing as being AWOL here ! Anyone can have a break away from life, but taking care is obligatory - no guilt allowed !! Only understanding.

Hi, thank you for the kind comment, glad that something I babbled about made some sense and has been helpful to you, always here to help if I can.
Things will get easier, it takes a while for this new way of eating and indeed living to kick in, but, once it does, you will see and feel the benefits and that is a great personal motivator.
Take care and ask for help if you need it, have a good day x

@NikkieDuranie
Many of us have fallen off the bus including me. You've just got to pick yourself up, dust yourself off and have another shot. I admit that it is hard in these first few months with so much information to process. There's some good advice so far. Small steps at a time. One target at a time. I am in a position now to assure you that over time it does become almost perfunctory. I've been out in the countryside for a few days with much eating out but I still knew what I could and couldn't have and how much. All down to practice and methodical observations of what certain foods do to me. Yes, a pain in the butt at first but in time getting progressively manageable.
Take care,
Glenn

Lovely encouraging post, and good advice for us all, thank you.

You may have slipped up for a couple of weeks, I left my meter with a relative for a few months at the beginning of the year. When I retrieved it I dreaded the first reading, not because I had been eating carb heavy foods but because I knew I had let my exercise regime go, almost completely (well it was winter and there had been snow). I introduced colours into my records to make it easier to see at a glance how things were going - reds are going down month by month, greens are staying consistent. Now to think about tweaking a couple of things to reduce the number of ambers! Take a step at a time and you will achieve amazing results.

It's so easy to over pressurise yourself. I was doing the same and really lost the plot a few days ago, so hubby locked the scales away and I am just concentrating on eating low carbish, low cal and taking the pressure off. My bg's are coming down. I was over complicating it. Good luck to you.
