Hi all, I am 19 years old and I have been having the following symptoms for a while now and they are gradually getting worse. I am unsure whether I may have diabetes or hyerthyroidism.

These are the symptoms which I have been witnessing:

Very sweaty palms (practically all the time).
I get hot flushes (surges of heat through my body).
I have been losing a lot of weight over the last month or so.
I tend to feel tired alot of the time.
I drink al lot of fluids (I have a dry mouth most of the time)
My fingers often feel like they are swelling up when i get really hot.
I have yeast infections in my finger nail and on all of my toe nails, I have had a yeast infection on my skin (on my shoulders, chest and back).
I have had really sore and chapped lips for months now.
I find that i get a loss of breath every now and then.
I have been finding it hard to concentrate and sit still at work recently.
I have also been urinating alot recently.

I am not sure whether i may have diabetes or hyperthyroidism as the symptoms which I have are both related to the above diseases. I have got another doctors appointment on thursday to hopefully get some blood tests done, but anyones help on here would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Elliott

Hi Elliot and welcome to the forum. We can't really give out medical advice on the forum, only shared experiences. Your symptoms have a lot in common with both diabetes and hyperthyroidism so it is really best to wait for your blood test results to come back. Please come back and tell us how you get on.

Hi yes, I understand you can only give shared experiences. I was just wondering if anyone thought my symptoms may sway towards diabetes type 1 or 2 or hyperthyroidism. Thanks

hya and welcome,
as sue says only the dr can diagnose u,in the meantime if you have a lloyds chemist they do free blood checks, your symptoms can be both the above as i have had both but they could also be a number of other things too e.g anxiety ,stress, while i was awaiting diagnosis i went to lloyds and bought a blood checker as id to wait 10 days 4 a glucose test, i was feeling deathly and bloods were over 27mmol constantly so i went to a and e and was kept in, so if u do feel really ill while waiting go to the hospital as if type 1 it can soon turn nasty (happened with me)
any more questions ...just ask and let us know how u get on :D

Hi
See a good doctor for a diagnosis. hypothyroids tend to put on weight. Diabetics to lose it.

Thanks for that, I will try get to my lloyds chemist to get a diabetes check done. I don't necassarily feel ill, i just keep getting hot flushes all the time and it is making my time at work everyday very hard, which is why i think i might have hyperthyroidism. Thanks

Is this true as everything I have read about hyperthyroidism says that they lose weight even though they get an increased apetite. Thanks

Some confusion here between hypER thyroid and hypO thyroid <G>

Endocrine problems often seem to travel in gangs, both thyroid and adrenal problems can affect BG. Getting a proper workup from your doctor is #1 plan, if you can manage to get one a referral to an Endocrinologist might be #2 plan, depending on your test results (see if you can get actual *numbers* from your tests.

Oh yeh sorry my bad got mixed up with the hypER and hypO. I will speak to dr and see if he thinks it may be hyperthyroidism or diabetes. Hopefully he will let me get a blood test done to see what it is. My doctor can sometimes be hard work and doesn't like referring me or sending me for blood tests. Thanks all.

Elliot, you are definitely not well!!Write down all your symptoms and anything else you want to tell the doctor and then insist ,if you have to,in getting blood tests.Either that or turn up at A&e and explain that your doctor will not treat you!!

Yes thanks for that, i have made a list of all my symptoms to go to the docs with, so I will see what he says and I will insisit on getting a blood test done. Hopefully I will find out soon. Thanks

Hi all, i have just had diabetes test done by my uncle who has diabetes and the result came back as 4.8. He says its a bit low but nothing to worry about. However, me and my uncle share the same smymptoms as listed above, so could i still possibly have it, as my uncle says some peoples blood sugar levels are low or high anyway? Thanks all

Did your uncle test you before you ate anything,Elliot?

It had been about 4 hours since i had eaten anything, but I had just drunk a glass of cranberry juice.

could the cranberry juice of affected the result it gave? Thanks in advance

4.8 is a non diabetic number,if you had just drunk cranberry juice it obviously had not had time to be absorbed.

Do you know what the 4.8 means then please? Is this the blood sugar? Is it possible that I may still have diabetes? Thanks

sorry misunderstood your last post. So if it appears I don't have a high or low blood sugar level, i guess i may not have diabetes. Perhaps It might behyperthyroidsism then? What do people think? Thanks

Elliot you really will be better to have the blood tests,we can't second guess the doctor! There are all sorts of variables taken into account when testing .
