Now this might be abit sickening - sorry if so - but i can't really believe it and wondered if anyone could explain. I cannot eat bread, bagels etc. without a significant spike in my blood sugars BUT I can eat a large bag of chocolate buttons with no effects on BS after 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 hours. Am I missing something or am I just really really incredibly lucky?! I'd like to know in case I'm actually doing myself some harm and not knowing it (otherwise chocolate buttons may become a main meal for me!)

Hi Paltry

I can hear the gnashing of teeth of the choccy lovers on the forum..

no seriously, you are not the first person who has come across this phenomenon, chances are it won't last! I know that some here (not mentioning any names ( ) have partaken of a good bit of choc, bg's kept within range and then shot up when they tried it again.

Sorry to disappoint and I'm sure someone better than me will be able to explain it in a more scientific manner but the "Big Buttons" diet is very unlikely to be the way forward for you..sorry!!

Thank you ladybird. I thought it might be too good to be true-or to last! It just seems very strange. The science would be good if anyone can explain it but otherwise, for now, I shall live safe in the knowledge that there isn't something wrong with my meter!

Oh Paltry, I've been there and it was bliss.........

Over Christmas I ate almost full tin of quality street and more and my BG levels hardly changed. I actually tested my meter as I thought it wasn't working

Can't get away with it as much now. I had a twirl last night (yes both fingers!)and bg level was 9.2 before going to bed.

I think it is something to do with the GI of chocolate and it slows down other things. I have noticed that, for example, biscuits without choc chips/containing choc have higher carbs than those with choc chips/containing chocolate. For me that's enough to swing it and I buy the choc chip ones :D

Chocolate buttons contain absolutely nothing of value nutritionally, all they will do is make you fat and rot your teeth. A good varied diet is called for with an emphasis on proteins and fats while keeping carbs to as low as possible at first for a few weeks and testing gradually to see how many can be eaten without spiking.

Don't worry Camilla. I know about nutrition and wouldn't seriously live on chocolate buttons!!! I'm just experimenting and found the result fascinating.

Ok, fair enough, I think you are only joking. Do be sensible though for your own sake.

I think Paltry isn't the only one to have a "buttons" moment Camilla, most of us know the sensible way to eat but every so often..well, it's what makes us human isn't it? :D

PS. My "buttons" moment was a bag of Salt and Vinegar McCoys a week ago.
