Type of diabetes
Type 2
Hi people, I have type 2 diabetes have over the last few days developed a nasty cold. Since then my blood sugar levels have shot through the roof. My normal morning reading is usually between 5.8 to 6.1 however this morning it was 8.8. Does anyone have any advise on what I should do?

Sorry - no advice - just empathy! Diagnosed 6 months ago so still learning loads. Like you I found that my out-of-bed readings went up with a cold, then dropped then stabilised about 4 days later. The information I found suggested that when we fight off colds we release hormones that mess with our sugar levels. I took that to mean that there wasn't anything I could do really but just had to ride out the swing in sugars during the early stages of the cold. Mine didn't go too high or too low - just swung around a bit!

Anyone else out there with more experience who can advise?

Sorry you have been unwell I have no real experience yet but like you just going through a nasty cough cold experience the worst since becoming a t2 it's hard to feel balanced when unwell so I wish you better health soon

Same experience here, have An upper respiratory infection right now and BG levels are much higher than my normal. The infection is also severely affecting my sense of balance, which made walking the 3 miles home from my retinopathy scan today really interesting!

I'm type 1 and currently have a sinus infection, when I first got it 3 weeks ago my bloods went up to 32 and I had ketones. Apparently the spiking in blood glucose when you have an infection or a cold is due to the body's stress hormones which can cause blood glucose to rise and/ or insulin resistance, but I could be wrong!
