four months ago I had a below knee amputation of right foot and was in a wheel chair for some time . I have put weight on round my waist and chest . I am now getting more active trying to get some strength back but the weight won't budge . I had a triple bypass 2014 and am on metabolism slowing drugs . I walk and exercise every day and eat a low carb diet , please can any body help . Is it possible for a middle aged diabetic to loose weight and gain muscle , I'm not ready to give up .

Simon, I'm sorry to hear about your troubles, but I admire your outlook and dedication.

While it is scientifically possible to lose weight and gain muscle at the same time, it is incredibly difficult and requires a near perfect diet. Practically speaking, you would need to focus on one or the other at any point in time. There is a reason bodybuilders "bulk" in the off-season and "cut" in season. Even the professionals don't try to do both at once.

While it's certainly possible, your metabolism slowing drugs, heart issues, and recent operations all pose as significant barriers in your quest to lose weight. Have you spoken to your doctors about your interest in losing weight? If so, what was their response? You have an extremely complicated situation that I think it best discussed with the professionals. Don't get me wrong, the "traditional" approaches may very well work, but I'd get everything approved by your doctors before trying something new.

Side note: if you haven't already found his Youtube channel, search for "Derek Weida." I think he might be an excellent source of motivation (and humor) for you.

Torq , thank you for your advice . Yes I have seen doctors , dietician and physio they are all pleased with diet and exercise its just such a lot of effort for small results . But I suppose little steps still matter .
