Hi , I have recently Had a GTT test after feeling rubbish etc, my last HB1ac result was 45 but my GTT result today was 4.8 .
The doctor said it is in the normal range.

I test my blood sugar levels every day and they are so varied, very high then dropping very quickly to a relatively normal level.

I control my levels with the LCHF diet and it has worked as far as weight loss and feeling less rubbish is concerned, I am very confused as to whether I am prediabetic or not. My first HB1ac result last September was 48 , two days ago it was 45, so I am doing something right.

I have also had blood pressure readings of 190/121 this morning and am now wearing a 24hr moniter .the last reading at 12.25 was 146/81, so coming down nicely.

Thank you for reading this post

Hello @grumpy grandma - I am listing the HBA1C categories for you. :)
Normal. Below 42mmol.
Prediabetic. 42 to 47mmol.
Diabetes. 48mmol or over.

Your recent HBA1C result being 45 - puts you in the Prediabetic Category.

I think I am finding it difficult to work out why my HBA1c result puts me in the prediabetic range but my GTT result says I'm not :wideyed:

@grumpy grandma - Hi. When you are next at the Doctor's Surgery - ask for a print out of your blood results and your HBA1C result will be listed. :)

I saw the results on the screen today , my HB 1ac is 45 but my glucose tolerance test result was 4.8 , sothe HB1ac puts me as prediabetic but the gtt doesn't . Am back to see the nurse tomorrow as am wearing a 24hr blood pressure monitor as my blood pressure is sky high , I'm going to pin her down to a better answer

@grumpy grandma - The HBA1C blood test measures your blood glucose over the previous 2 - 3 months, and is the test normally given to diagnose your diabetes status. :) This test is usually done at each review be it at 3 months or 6 months review. Let us know what the Nurse has to say? I am not "knocking" the Nurse, but some need to learn more about Diabetes. You will gain far more information, help, support on this forum. :)

It is thanks to this forum that I know what questions to ask lol . My first HBA1c last sept was 48 but thanks to the low carb diet I have followed (thanks to this forum ) I have lost 12 kilos and my blood test is now 45 . I do test at home and I tend to go very high then drop very quickly and it makes me feel really grotty. I think my more immediate worry is my blood pressure ( 190/120 at first , now hovering between 145/103 and 190/100 ) . This monitor is driving crazy going off every 30 mins . Going to be a long night lol

@grumpy grandma - Well Done on your weight loss.:). I too have High Blood Pressure and take 3 tablets everyday, and check mine 4 times a week. Don't get stressed over your blood pressure, in case you don't know = Worry and Stress releases Cortisol (Hormone) into the blood, and this raises blood sugars. Drink plenty of water as this helps to flush out your system and stabilize glucose (sugar) in your bloodstream.

Hi,

You say you test after a meal and go very high then drop quickly to normal levels. This is ringing alarm bells for me.
What do you mean by very high? Can you give us an example of your tests before a meal and after a meal, and what you ate?

The last high reading I had was after I had a turkey sandwich , two thin slices of whole grain bread with turkey ( was out and needed something to eat ) tested after 90 mins and it was 11, 30 mins later it was 5.6 . I was feeling really ropey at this point , shaky and agitated . I find I feel my best at about 6.2 , anything lower and I feel ill . My highest reading has been 16 and my lowest has been 4.7 , thankfully not too often . I don't eat bread very often , but it's really weird as sometimes i am ok and other times it affects me . The only way I could stop the fluctuations is to eat very little but that's not a good idea . I don't seem to have any set pattern for what foods affect me , I think I find something that's ok, then the next time I eat it it sets me off . Whilst my doctor is very good he just said diabetes is really hard to diagnose !

I am thinking you may find it useful to have a browse round the Reactive Hypoglycemia forum and see if anything rings a bell with you. There are a lot of knowledgeable RH people on there who will answer your questions. I'm not at all suggesting this is what you have, but it may help.

I spoke to the other practise nurse today and she said I AM prediabetic still , so less confusion now on my part . The downside is I have now been diagnosed with high blood pressure so it's off to see the doctor on Monday . The link about RH was very interesting and might explain why my GTT result was 4.8 after 2 hours , perhaps if they had done the blood in between the first and last bloods it might have shown a different reading .
Plenty to talk to the doctor about on Monday !!

Thank you
Just want to get this sorted so I stop feeling so rough. We have two of our grandchildren living with us so I need to be as fit and healthy as possible . Plus hubby is fed up of me being grumpy lol , he just takes one look at me and says " your blood sugars again ? " bless him

Do read round the forums, especially the RH one, and ask questions. Diet is the key. Testing at home is essential, and it helps enormously if you keep a food diary including portion sizes and recording your levels alongside. Patterns will emerge and will help you discover just what is causing the highs, enabling you to do without or seriously reduce portion sizes of the carbs. One slice of bread may be fine. 2 slices may not be. I imagine part of you feeling grotty and grumpy is because you shoot right up and then drop quickly.

Hi. I agree with @Bluetit1802 that you may have one of the stranger conditions. Sadly your surgery may not be knowledgeable enough to know that. I suspect they ought to refer you to a diabetes clinic for some tests but as you show as pre-diabetics they won't do that. Anyway I would keep going with the LCHF diet and anything else that can get BP and any excess weight down

I forgot to mention that people that do have RH can be diabetic/pre-diabetic, and they can also be non-diabetic. They are different things and one doesn't depend on the other.

I did a controlled experiment with my tea tonight , I had spaghetti Bol and some pasta . Reading before tea was 5.7 , one hour later 9.5 , 30 mins later it was 6.6 then at the 2 hour mark it was 6.4.

Absolutely nothing wrong with that at all.
Have a try with a grain based meal - bread, cereal, or something made with flour
Then try another meal of something sweet.

See if you can work out which type of food is causing your problems.

Just doing another experiment as its over 3 hours since we had tea . Just ate 100gm raisins (yummy)and an asda choc muffin ( hate cakes ) . Went very hot and shaky straight away and am sat outside cooling off :wacky:.will test again in a bit .
