Good evening all,

So, I finally got round to seeing my DN for my review. Back in November my Hb1ac was 9.8. Not long after that I started dabbling with low carb, gradually cutting out the breads, pastas & flour based foods. I saw improvements in my energy, and more importantly my eyesight - no more blurry mornings.

I'm still working on it, and I'm far from perfect diet wise, but today my Hb1ac came back at 8.3 - which is great compared to the last one. My cholesterol is normal, and my BP is within the acceptable range ( I took myself off BP meds 18 months ago). I took my Eat Fat book, and the DN took the details, she said it looked like a good book and was laid out well. She agreed that thinking is changing, and that fat is no longer seen as the enemy, and was very supportive of the eating plan. In short she said I was doing really well and should keep at it. She said she'd like to see my meter results to compare the daily readings to the 3 month average of the Hb1ac, so I'm going back in a few weeks to show her the reports - the Bayer Contour meter allows me to pull of various reports so that's good.

I explained that I'm not seeing the weight loss yet that others seem to get, and she said that could be a combination of diabetes/age - but we could explore changing my meds to some that promote weight loss ( not insulin) , but it would be up to me what decided to do.

It's always good when you can have positive discussion rather than just listening and being told what is going to happen. I think I'm lucky with the team I see as they seem keen to work with me rather than just telling me what to do. I like to go along with questions and research and I feel that works well.

I think a combination of LCHF & sensible exercise is the way forwards at this point.

Here's to further improvements.

Seanj67, my hope is that you'll see your numbers drop a lot more after you eliminate grains, sugar, starchy beans and vegetables, and fruit, though I think it will still take a while. I'm still in there fighting with you to get my numbers all the way down. It's a takes a lot of grit to do this. Congrats on your progress!

Good progress. I am sure your numbers will drop a lot more if you continue to eliminate high carb foods (bread, potatoes, pasta, rice, cakes, biscuits etc), and I am sure you will continue to feel the benefits from it.
The 'Eat Fat' book is certainly a good book to follow. I regularly refer to it.
Refreshing to hear that your DN supports this diet and say things are changing.

I have been low carbing for over a year now. It's a way of life. Took me a few months to get used to it, but now I find it easy to follow.

Yea, I do struggle sometime for food ideas, but it just takes a little forward planning. I don't miss bread or potatoes at all really. I just tend to cook the normal meals and leave out the carbs...

Yes Ian, it was refreshing. Both the DN's i've seen have been very supportive - I told my GP a few years back that I was doing Dukan, and she was all for that too :)
