An HbA1c test is an indicator of your average blood glucose over the last three months. For most people, a value over 48 indicates you are diabetic. So your value of 72 is definitely in the diabetic range. The medications you have been prescribed are intended to help your body make and use insulin better, in order to scrub excess sugar from your blood. Excess sugar in the blood can lead to tissue and organ damage. This site has a good explanation page about the "A1C test" and what it means. https://www.diabetes.co.uk/what-is-hba1c.html
