Just had blood test for fatigue, headaches and feeling dizzy! Results were my hba1c was 50 after doing a bit of research from what I gather it is diabetes? Receptionist wasn’t very helpful just told me my results were 50 and I needed another blood test? I just don’t know what’s going on? Is it a definite diabetes diagnosis or not?

My original HbA1c was repeated to be sure it was correct, and the receptionist can't give a diagnosis. After the next test you should be speaking to a doctor, or possibly a Diabetes Nurse.

An HbA1c of 50 isn't much into the diabetic range, which starts at 48, but if your next test is over 48 then yes, it will be a diagnosis. However it's one that you can probably manage successfully with diet & exercise. There are lots of people here who started out much higher and have done just that.

So it's easy to say & hard to do, but try not to worry at this point in time.

My advice would be to change nothing until the second test, that way if diagnosed (as 50 is borderline), you would be registered, and qualify for the health checks associated with the diagnosis. Then you can tackle it with diet whether diagnosed or not. As a borderline number a second test is necessary for diagnosis, only much higher numbers would be diagnosed on a single test.

Thanks, I have only spoken to receptionist and haven’t had any advice on what to do or not do anyway! I will repeat my bloods and just wait to see what the results are

One thing to remember is that a diabetes diagnosis never goes away - once a diabetic, always a diabetic in the eyes of the health service. That can have implications for things like life insurance. My take is that it is better to avoid the formal diagnosis if you possibly can (I wish I had) but then behave as if you had been diagnosed.

With a starting BG of 50, given a possible 6% error in test result, you would only be looking to drop your BG by a couple of points to under 48. If the test could be deferred for a couple a weeks, on low-carb, it might be possible. But that's your decision.
