Hi
I've just put the phone down from the Dr who has said my HBA1C reading is 57.

I haven't seen the Dr yet to discuss but wondered if they would recommend this is controlled initially by diet, or if the levels are too high and I will be put on metformin (or something else)?

This seems very high to me, should I be really concerned, I am only 49 years old but it is in the family unfortunately.

Thank you

Hi @babyflowers and welcome

57 is firmly in the diabetic range, but not so high. The threshold for diagnosis in the UK is 48, with 42-47 being seen as pre-diabetic.

I would expect at that level to be offered the opportunity to manage through diet alone. And this is the right place for advice and support to do just that!

The key will be to reduce the carbohydrate content of your food. Many members here have achieved non diabetic HbA1c say doing just that, some from much higher starting points. This is a great website to get you started: https://www.dietdoctor.com/

Also helpful will be a blood glucose meter to measure the impact different foods have on your blood sugars.
