I had my diabetes MOT last week and I got the results today and the doctor wants to see me. It is 66. I thought that was not too bad considering it took in Christmas my birthday and a whole lot of bad days in between. I know my diet is the problem, never have a day where I dont eat chocolates or cakes. So as I say I thought 66 was quite lucky on 4 x 500mg metformin. I have done really well 1 year ago it was 111. I was on glipazide but it was awful last time I got it checked I had got it down to 55. I dont really want to take any more pills.

I would think that the GP needs to see you due to the rise from 55 to 66 between your last two tests.

It's probably a good idea to decide for yourself what your plan of action will be to reverse that reading, and as you managed to halve your HbA1c before, you should know how to do so again.

Your GP may want to put you onto stronger meds, so it will be good to have your plan ready to use as an alternative if you don't want to follow that course.

Good luck.

I think if you look at your history, as you describe it, if 111 > 55 > 66, that's a starting point, reducing by in round terms, 50%, then going up by 20%. That doesn't read very stable to me.

It sounds like you know you aren't being as vigilant or as careful as you might, so I guess you have to decide what has to change - the things you eat and drink or potentially the medications you take to "allow" you to continue to consume the foodstuffs you have been doing.

The thing about Christmas, your birthday are they will keep coming around each year. They don't change. If your "bad days" relate to days you ate badly, as opposed to days when terrible, completely unavoidable things happen, then who know. Either way, it comes back to what you decide to do about it.

Your Doc can advise all he likes, and prescribe all he likes, but diabetes management - especially for T2s - sits fairly and squarely with the diabetic. Yes, support helps, but a large proportion of the outcomes are totally with you.

Good luck with it all.

Hi @gordie123abc

Do you have a meter? Do you test your levels regularly?

If not I would make it a priority to get the Doctor to prescribe one as this is the first step to taking control of your diabetes!!!!

If only it were as simple as that! The vast majority won't prescribe for type 2's on Metformin or diet control:(
EDIT - Gordie, just remembered you are on Prednisolone too. I'll be frank, you say you eat chocolate or cake every day, that's not going to help your levels come down at all. Better not to eat these things I'm afraid.

Well, I know this may sound a little harsh, but eating things you know are not helping, then taking meds in the hope they will give you a miracle result will not work. Diabetes is progressive, so you have to wake up to controlling what you eat now, because it will not go away. Sadly there are no options to this. What you put in your mouth will determine your future, not the medication. It looks as if you really know this, and have already managed to achieve some really positive results, so my advice is to take a deep breath, give yourself a pat on the back for what you achieved, then go for it again, but this time, for the rest of your life. It's worth it!

Agree with all of the above apart from the "progressive" part. I've had non diabetic number for over 4 yrs, and I know there are many who are the same. Progression is not a foregone conclusion thankfully :)

My somewhat harsh words were meant as motivation. For certain if one doesn't look after themselves, progression is on the cards. I too have managed to get back to non diabetic numbers, but am well aware that if one gives in to the chocolate and cake, or any of the other foods that helped to get those numbers up in the first place, then it won't be long before those numbers start to creep up again, and the need for meds will increase. Sadly most people I have come into contact with believe that once on tablets they can carry on with their old ways. It's such a shame people don't get the right messages. It makes me both angry and sad

You and me both Mick, but hopefully the message is starting to get through. If only the NHS would catch up..

I have a friend who became very unwell because she thought that when put on metformin she could eat what she liked the doctors at A and E soon disabused her of that misconception.
