Hi. Being my first post here I hope I have posted in the correct area. I am looking for some advice on behalf of my husband. He is type 2 and has his last blood tests done in January. This week he saw a podiatrist and needs nail avulsion surgery on both feet which they booked for end of April. The GP surgery is now refusing to do the required HBA1C because it will less than 3 months ago since the previous test, despite being told it has to be done before he can have the surgery. Is there any way around this and who do we speak to? He can't really afford to delay the surgery as we will be moving soon after and that would mean likely several months delay and starting afresh in the referral system as we are leaving the county we are living in now. He is also in pain and been on antibiotics several times so desperate to get this seen to as soon as possible. He works a high stress job with lots of travel and everything was planned around this surgery date. Thank you for any advice.

test is prior 2-3 months levels. i note you've said earlier than 3 months was the refusal, and you've stated the surgical proceedure is booked for the end of april and the prior test was january. that will be 3 months :) maybe call into the surgery and ask for the hba1c to be booked at earliest date. labs can usually process results fairly quickly so perhaps it may work out ok.

Not sure if you've asked the max length of time from the last hba1c test is for the proceedure to go ahead?

only other suggestion have is he could contact his diabetic specalist nurse and see if they can arrange it to be done as close to the surgery date as possible ensuring enough time to get the results back in time for the proceedure.

good luck :)

Thank you for responding so quickly! He had the blood test 28 Jan and surgery is meant to be 23 April :( Nurse said yesterday that lab refused bloods previously even if it's one day early. It is frankly a little silly if it's a test required for surgery. He has no assigned diabetic nurse they just book him with any of the nurses at the surgery and that is who he saw yesterday. I will ask him to try contact the podiatry department and see if they can do anything. At this point perhaps, if they will accept it, we will look at having the blood test done privately if that is the only way to bypass the red tape. The podiatrist noted the date of the blood test and said she has to have results less than (I think, will check with him) 6 weeks old, hence the issue of wanting new tests.
