HbA1c change by Consultant

Today I met with my Consultant for a check-up, he was generally happy with how I monitor, my type 2 Diabetes, but was concerned my HbA1c, which two visits ago was acceptable, but had gone up, to 10.1. This I believe is down to stress, as my wife is recovering from Cancer. What was strange was that he looked at my Accu Check Graphs and found they were of. Now after 3yrs of 1 x test every morning, he wants a midday test, and instead of a graph report want an actual figures diary. He also ordered a blood test today, and normally I have to fast, so surely he is going to receive a false result. Then concludes by saying carry on as normal self y in 4 x months - very confusing what he is try to achieve, especially when he knows I have other health issues involving medications other than those I take for my Type 2 Diabetes

Ours not to reason why...

Yes, I agree with you - from my limited understanding of how things work, some of those requests seem odd.

Was the blood test he sent you for an HbA1c or a 'fasting' blood glucose? I can see that a hba1c might make an interesting comparison with 4 months time, but a fasting? Nope. Could it have been a test for anything else? Stress hormones, maybe?

The written figures diary is also a puzzle. I find graphs MUCH easier to 'read' for trends and overall tendencies. But you will still have your Accu Chek graphs, won't you? I would be tempted to use them to write out my 'figures diary' just before my next appt! I think I would also want to test more often for a while - trying to map out when, or what foods, are causing the increase in hba1c. Can you get hld of the extra strips that would require?

I agree with you that stress does very odd things to BG. My dawn phenomenon goes completely haywire with stress, and that is only on a day to day blip thing. What it must be doing to you with the kind of grinding daily worry you are under, I can only guess.

Best wishes to you, and your wife.

I think you only have to fast when you're having a cholesterol blood test too. Someone I'm sure will correct me if I'm wrong.

If only doing one test a day then it isnt telling you how your food is affecting you. Fine maybe he wants your dawn test but quite frankly it to me says nothing to you unless it is measured around food intake it may be stress it may be other health problems...l will bet though if you did it round food your answer would be there.
