Hba1c confusion please help

Hi

New here but already received some excellent advice and friendly posts thank you. I keep seeing people post their Hba1c level and I dont understand what that is. I had a fasting glucose test to deternine I was diabetic and was told my levels were 8 before glucose drink and 14 two hours later. Is either of these my Hba1c? Thanks

No, It's a blood test taken to work out the average blood sugar past three months.

Not the standard blood glucose test using a personal glucose meter and finger pricker.

Thank you so I am assuming I will have that done at my appointment tomorrow when i see the nurse or is it a fasting test?
 
HbA1c as such does not require fasting but they may want to do other tests (lipids and such) at the same time that do require fasting.

Glucose sticks to haemoglobin in the red cells. The more glucose is around, the more sticks. this is what HbA1c measures. Since the lifespan of a red cell is about 120days, The measurement is appropriate for the previous 120days or so, since any older red cell are gone. that is why some authorities recommend Testing every 3 months. with an annual test, the most recent history of BG control plays a disproportionate part in the final result

I have a partner with Type 1 diabetes. He doesn't manage it properly - never tests his blood sugar levels. As far as I am aware he only goes to a doctor to get insulin scripts. Sorry for being ignorant - I want to learn more - what should he be doing? He is 47 and has had diabetes since 23. He guesses insulin dosage on "how he feels". I think I understand Hba1c now but what level should you be? He is depressed and now I understand that is part of the disease. He is a heavy drinker and I know that is bad. I also have never seen him modify his diet. He eats whatever (heaps of chocolate & potato crisps) and even misses meals. This can't be good. What should he be eating? He is fairly active workwise and isn't fat - bordering on too thin. Sorry this has gone off the topic. Help!
