Hello Everyone,
Just registered although I have been seeking guidence from the site since I was diagnosed Type 2 on 23rd June 2010. I am 75 now and had the bypass and an ICD fitted and then
along came this type 2, 6 months later.(Also became a Gas bag ugh !!) I have read a few books on the subject and read this forum and I find it all
very facinating especially to be diagnosed at 75. What a complex subject with this blood glucose controlling all our organs. It is most confusing . So many different approaches to keeping healthier However Education being the greatest form of defense.
One must ask questions . So here goes. I read "Cugilas" post dated the 24th April 2010 referring to
HbA1c conversion to IFCC numbers. Q 1. What do the letter IFCC stand for?? . Q2. Can the HbA1c
numbers only be obtained from a blood sample taken at the blood Clinic and then examined in the Laboratory
and the results sent to your Dr. OR can you calculate the HbA1c from the Blood Glucose samples you take via your personal meter and then use his conversion figures to obtain a similar Lab result .
Thank you .Newbie Poster Blackbear. :?:

1. IFCC ............International Federation of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine.
The conversion gives the new standard in which HbA1c will be measured. At present both figures are given until April 2011. You may see both numbers even after that date.

2. No. Some clinics have a very expensive machine which will use a finger prck sample, analyse it in about 5 minutes and give you your HbA1c. Many still have a blood sample taken which is then sent off for analysis, usually returned to your GP a few days later. You can also purchase a Home HbA1c testing kit where you send off a sample and get a result back in a day or so by e-mail, letter etc.

3. To achieve any accuracy using your personal Bg meter you would have to make a very large number of tests. Too many to be practical. The number that you get would be an average over say 90 days. There is a conversion calculator here which will give an approximate result.......I wouldn't rely on it too much. The Lab or Clinic tests are more accurate.

I have in the past used a Home Testing kit and the results seem accurate enough........however, why pay for something you can get for free every 3 - 6 mths ?
