HbA1c Converter

Last night, to give my diabetic some encouragement, I took his 30 day BG average fasting reading from his monitor and converted it into an HbA1c percentage. The converter on Diabetes.co.uk came up with 5.1%.

I think this is excellent - if I've done it correctly and I think I have - but is it too soon, after only 30 days of readings, to give us an overall idea of his HbA1c level providing he sticks at the low carb diet?

I check my average fairly regularly and mine is similar to your OH.

My 2nd HBA1c is due 2/4 and I will be very disappointed if it's not in the ballpark.

You have to remember that the 30 day average on your meter is only the average of the readings you've taken.

Sorry if that's obvious, but say you only took a waking reading and not +2hrs after meals, then all the readings in the meter would be low, so your 30day average would also be low.

To be really indicative, you need to have a solid mixture of before, +1hr and +2hr readings across the day (as many of us are more tolerant of carbs at differing times of the day) and then keep this testing going for a month. The trouble is you'll use an awful lot of test strips.

I don't want to discourage you - 5.1% would be fantastic - but be aware of the data you're basing it on.

I am doing the same, fasting bG but including the post-evening meal, as this is my major carb intake. Snacks and lunch are always much lower because of what I eat during the day... more hypo than hyper so to speak. My fasting is pre-exercise too to avoid cheating. I don't do any exercise in the evening so no problem there.
