HbA1c diagnosis

Thank you for that.

In that my HbA1c results have been 6.0, 5.9, 6.0 and now 5.7 with no medications - it would appear that I wouldn't be diagnosed with diabetes.

Don't worry though - I will continue to eat and exercise as if I do have it - if only to keep my weight down - and to fit into all those lovely new clothes that was a bonus for getting down to a normal BMI

I was initially diagnosed when my GP was on a sabbatical. She has since told me that she had been keeping an eye on my blood tests and considered me to be borderline - and in that she knew I had a healthy lifestyle she wasn't too worried.

Still, her overweight sub, who told me that I wasn't overweight on diagnosis - was the perfect incentive for me to lose XS pounds. I thought to myself - I may not be as fat you - but I am still overweight and that is going to change.

Motivation is a strange thing.

Lovely GP has now retired, and new GP has made a wonderful start by refusing to presrcibe test strips!

I don't know if you have read the above, basic advice for newly diagnosed. This has been compiled by the Monitors and will help you to avoid a diagnosis.

I would also like to welcome you to the forum. Any questions then please ask, we are all in this together.

Take care.

If HbA1c readings are 'regularly' below 6.5 will it be possible to have ones diagnosis as T2 reversed ?
Chris

If the 'magic' figure is 6.5 then according to them I am not diabetic as I have never had an HbA1c above 5.8. :? I was diagnosed with fasting BG's of 8.6 and 8.5. The HbA1c is just an average and doesn't show your true high levels therefore I don't think this is an accurate basis for diagnosis.

Hi Daisy,
This site is very reliable for all things diabetic and the HBA1c is now going to be used for diagnosis.
They may have a typing error :?:

Yes but isn't the magic figure of 6.5 if you are eating all foods? (ie: in a non-diabetic)
If we ate a diet with sugar and full quantities of carbs I bet our figures would make interesting reading.
Someone who wasn't diabetic would have a low figure due to their ability to deal with the glucose surely.
Just a thought,
Angie

Hi honeybear and Catherine
I have just noticed that unfortunately the link that Catherine posted concerning basic information for newly diagnosed diabetics has an error in it therefore will not work. Here is the corrected link:

Welcome to the forum, honeybear

I think that once you're on the long slippery slope marked 'pre-diabetes', with HbA1cs on the high side of the normal range, you will end up diabetic unless you take control, so you might as well look after yourself - lifestyle etc - as if you really are diabetic.

I'm optimistic that, once I've got the weight off and my lifestyle firmly in place, I shall get off all meds and be within the 'normal' BG range.

But if I go back to my old ways, it's diabetes all the way - and probably progressive!
