hba1c down a bit, very pleased.

Hi guys, I'm back after not being on the forum for a while as things were chugging along nicely! I started adding back in some carbs in the form of patrick holford low gi muesli which I make up myself with cinnamon, sunflower, pumpkin seeds etc, also having some oatcakes with cheese as snacks etc. went back for my six month hba1c and have had such a shock as its 11!!! I cannot believe it as I've lost round about18 lbs and kept it off. I never cheat, don't eat bread, potatoes, flour etc, I simply don't know what I'm doing wrong.mam thinking about doing the 5:2 diet to see if that will help but would welcome any advice from the forum on how my result can have doubled in just six months. Help.

Hi Zazoo - Been there and done the yo-yo so i can understand the frustration. Only thing to do is to pick yourself and dust off the bad habits and go back to doing what worked for you previously. I have learnt the hard way that the changes one needs to make are permanent lifestyle changes. It is only natural to feel elated when one reaches a particular level but the treats have to be temporary otherwise we fall back into the bad habits.

I'd pick up a meter and test after each meal and see what is causing the spikes.

Hi again,

I agree with @s_k_s that you need to buy a meter and start testing, otherwise you have no real idea what is causing matters to deteriorate and you don't want to end up back where you first started. It probably is the muesli and milk to blame, but there could be other things too. A meter will tell you far better than we could.

Have you still got weight to lose? Weight loss is best for improving insulin resistance, and so is exercise. We need to get rid of any fat round the waist area in particular. I doubt fasting will help on its own, and that isn't always a good idea for diabetics because the liver kicks in and starts sending its own glucose into the bloodstream to keep the energy levels up. It is usually best to stick to 3 meals a day evenly spaced with no (or very few) snacks. However, if the 5:2 is what you want to try, then go ahead.
