Had my results today, my Hba1c has risen to 7.1%. I've been doing the 8 week blood sugar diet for one week and feel very disappointed that it's gone up. I'm going to persevere with the diet but I have a feeling I'm going to be told I need to increase my Metformin. Apart from carrying on with the diet, what else can I do?

That's disappointing for you, but as you say, you've only been on the diet for a week. Stick with it.
Metformin only helps a little so if you want to hold fire on taking more, tell your GP to wait and see if you can do it with diet.
Are you embracing all the lovely fats in the diet ? don't be scared of them.. it's what makes it work.
Cut the carbs as low as you can at first.. you can always add more later.
Do you have a meter ? Testing will tell you if certain foods spike your BG.
Don't panic, this is a marathon, not a sprint :)

Hi @carina62 the HbA1c test would show your bs levels over the last 8-12 weeks, which would include the Xmas period, when you have said you did over indulge. You are still lower than you were on your initial diagnosis at 7.8. You have only just started your 8 week course, and that should improve your readings, which you should be able to confirm if you are self testing.
I wouldn't stress too much about the HbA1c result. It's up to you whether you want to take Metafornin. As I understand it it doesn't make much difference to bs levels, but does help suppress appetite.

Thank you all. I will try and brush my disappointment aside and carry on with my diet. I'm due to see the diabetic nurse on the 27th and will tell her I want to continue to do what I'm doing with my diet and refuse any further medication for the time being and see how things go by the time I have my next review which will be in 6 months time. I am on x2 500mg Metformin tablets daily.

Carina - I'm sorry your A1c has risen. Could you tell us what it rose from?

One week on any diet would only show a very modest change on HbA1c, so I wouldn't immediately call your 8-week plan a failure. It just isn't enough time to conclude anything.

More generally; I can see from your signature you've been diabetic for some years now. In relatively recent times, have you undertaken a programme of testing to pin-point foods making your blood sugars increase? The very annoying thing about diabetes is that it's such a personal disorder. Whilst, for T2s, it's almost always carbs impacting our blood sugars, it's not necessarily the same foods that provide the real blood sugar rocket fuel.

For some folks it's bread, for some sugar, for some potatoes, and so on. I know one person who really isn't able to eat grains, but can get away with more sugar than most. For others it's fruit that makes the numbers rocket. In my own early days I could eat some rice, but mashed potato was like dynamite. These days having got myself into a good place I find my body can cope with most things much more easily.

So, I think what I'm saying is that not all cabs are equal in how we deal with them, and as such that testing is really important to identifying how to manage things moving forward.

Good luck with it all.

I guess my concern is around why you're so resistant to medication.

Wouldn't it be better to accept the increase in medication, get your a1c down to a safer level, AND THEN see if you can taper off the medication?

I suppose it comes down to what you value more: being healthy or avoiding medication.
