hba1c is not coming down

hi i have only been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes for the last 5 months i have been taking 3 metformin 500mg per day i eat healthy and play squash 3 times per week my hba1c was 10.8 and after 5 months taking the tablets and eating healthy it has only came down to 10.6 the doctor has just prescibed me with metformin 850 to be taken in the morning 500mg lunch time and another 850mg tea time do you think this will do the trick are there any side affects on high dosage and if it dont work what is the next step.

Hi Dave,
Can you give us some idea of what you mean by eating healthy? The official government version of healthy eating, which many doctors and other health professionals tout, is to eat plenty of starchy carbohydrates with every meal. This is dubious advice even for a non-diabetic, but is literally a death-sentence for a diabetic.
Diabetics cannot process blood sugar adequately.
Carbs are what makes blood sugar.
More carbs = more blood sugar.
Less carbs = lower blood sugar.
It's as simple as that.

thanks for replying, as i am new to diabetes at first i thought jacket potatoe, pasta and anything that contained very little sugar was good healthy food, i have since learned that carbs are no good for diabetics and have recently changed my diet cutting down on carbs i am hoping this will lower my hba1c, is it ok to eat gi bread ? another quick question my hbalc is 13.6 how bad is that?

Hi Dave

Your hb1ac is almost three times as high as it should be, but do not worry too much, like myself you thought that pasta and bread and potatoes with the skin on are super healthy food when in reality these foods have very little nutritional value.
Cut these out, and you will see your bg levels drop and your next hb1ac will be much lower, its early days yet for you and after such a short while of high readings you wont have developed complications yet, but keep working on reducing your bg levels.

I used to be morbidly obese and followed a very, very low carb diet for 2 years, once I reached my target weight I increased my carb intake slightly, the only carbs that I have are low GI, so that includes a slice of bread for me, but you know I dont even fancy a slice every day,
The important thing for you is to test yourself and see how food is affecting you, if low GI bread causes you to spike then its not good for you at the moment, maybe it is later on, when your weight is normal and your bg has been steady for a long time and in non-dibetic range try bread again, you will soon see. on the other hand wait for Fergus's bread to hit the shops and you may be able to eat bread sooner than you think (in moderation of course).

Try and get hold of the books by Dr Charles Clark, they are really easy to read and understand, the more you can learn about diabetes and food intake the better. Dont despair, it will all get easier with time.

thanks for replying i will take everything you said on board as i am determind to get the better of diabetes, i was dissapointed with my hba1c because since i was diagnosed with diabetes i have stopped eating anything sugary i do regular exercise playing squash 3 times per week and my weight is only 11.5st, i guess i have a lot to learn and a little advice goes a long way

Dave for every 10grams of table sugar you eat, you make 5 grams of blood glucose FAST. For every 10 grams of starch you eat, you make 10 grams of blood glucose, just a bit slower.
