When I was diagnosed my Hba1c level was 100.

In the 2 weeks since the blood test, I've been eating well and my BG is dropping.

I've been using an app to record my BG and carbs. Based on those readings the app is estimating my Hba1c level as 55. I know the app is just a guess, but is it making a educated guess which can be relied on to monitor my progress?

Does the drop from 100 to 55 seem plausible? Is this a reasonable rate of improvement in the space of a couple of weeks?

Thanks. George.

Depends completely on how often you test and whether your blood sugars spikes between tests.. Also of course depends on what changes you have made to your diet. Looking at some of your other postings it would seem you have gone very low carb. My HbA1c went from 87 to 45 in 2 months of extreme low carb and 16:8 fasting so it could well be possible.

It is a plausible estimate, but as it only reflects 2 weeks I doubt it can be relied upon as anything other than a guess. So much depends on how often you have tested, and at which times. It also depends on things such as when you spike after a meal, how long that spike takes to come down to where you started, how high (or low) you are in between all your tests, whether the majority of your tests are fasting/before meals, and many other factors.

If I were you I would stop trying to guess and simply record everything and look for trends.

I pretty much asked the same question maybe a week ago!! If your daily tests are stable I don't see why your next hba1c test results wouldn't of dropped dramatically too I have mine in early January and I'm hoping for the same I'll let you know how I got on !! But good luck and keep up the good work your obviously doing

The red blood corpuscles which hold the haemoglobin molecules have a life of about 3 months, so the clinic tests are not done before then, as you need to have a fresh lot made, and the ones with glycated haemoglobin get broken down for parts.

Thanks for the replies guys. I realise the app is only a guess. I just wondered if the reduction it guessed was reasonable for couple of weeks of better eating and maybe as an indicator of my progress until I get my next test.

By the way, I'm not on extreme low carbs at the moment. My average is a little over 100 g per day.

Two weeks of lowered bgs aren't going to give you an accurate forecast of what your next HbA1c will be.
But if you keep your bgs at that level for the 12 weeks before your next HbA1c test it should be reasonably close to what your app is forecasting.
I don't have an app, but my average fbgs in the 12 weeks before my last HbA1c were 6.3, which indicated my HbA1c should be around 38. It was actually 39, so quite close.
