I have always had fasting bloods taken for my hba1c but have just rung the surgery and they are now doing non fasting bloods. Do you fast or not before hba1c? It's sad that I don't actually trust them to know what I am doing.

It's over two years since my surgery stopped fasting bs tests. It's much easier l have a blood test every three months then I ring and find out what it is and I'm told if my DN won't to see me or not.I have a bgt tomorrow.

If you are having JUST the HbA1c test done , it's testing your average glucose levels over the last 3 months, and there's no need to fast beforehand, as this will have no effect one way or the other on the results.

Additional blood tests at the same time may require that you fast beforehand.

For Hba1C it doesn't matter whether you fast as it looks at the amount of glucose that has become attached to red blood cells over the past three months or so.

In the past you may also have had Cholesterol done at the same time, where fasting does affect the outcome.

Thanks for the replies. Sounds like they are not doing the cholesterol anymore. Am going to get my cholesterol done at the pharmacy anyway as wanted the breakdown but was going to get it done the same day as my bloods so I could compare the accuracy of the pharmacy one.

Sure most pharmacy's only do a Total Cholesterol check and not a full lipid breakdown, ask your surgery why they can't do a full lipid breakdown if your concerned about your cholesterol.

Looks like Lloyd's do the full lipid breakdown, but still worth chasing up why your gp surgery have stopped doing the fasting cholesterol test.

When I have my blood test they still do my cholesterol check ,I will ask about my cholesterol test tomorrow.

I rang the surgery and I am down for a cholesterol check so the procedure must have changed along the way. I tried to book a cholesterol at the chemist for the breakdown but they won't do it if you are diabetic. I will wait and see what my score is in Feb and if it's still high go to the docs for a breakdown.

I had my blood taken yesterday and was told the cholesterol check was all done together so will wait till Tuesday to get my results.

I had fasting test before my HbA1c in August, but that was because they were also checking my thyroid levels, as I have hyperthyroidism, and my cholesterol levels as I am on statins.
When I had my 3 month retest it was non-fasting as they were only checking my BG levels.
When I have my 12 monthly test in August it will be a fasting test again as they will be checking my thyroid and cholesterol levels again.

I'm on statins at the mo as well so will wait and see. Hopefully it has dropped since last time.
