Hba1c Result

I've just been diagnosed. will see dr in 3 weeks. Receptionist said that my blood test result is 59 for 3 month period and after fasting was 7.3...whatever all that means. She said anything over 48 is diabetic? I am 5'4" and am overweight at 12stones. Will weight loss be enough to correct this blood sugar reading? Been told I will be prescribed a statin and possibly metformin. Am just so stunned and shocked at the moment not to mention confused as to what I should be eating
