hey,
just thought some of you might like to know my hbA1c result that i got today. my first one was up on a 13.9, then my second one was 8.6, then my third one was 6.8, and today it was 6.5. it is on its way down but looking at other peoples posts lots of you have it on fives, so i think mine needs to come down futher. thanks for reading :)

You have done really well getting your Hba1c down so low. However, as a Type 1 on insulin please be careful trying to reduce it into the 5's. This can result in hypos and also loss of hypo awareness if you run your levels too low.

Many of the members who get down into the 5's are Type 2's and usually not on insulin.

thanks sue, that made me feel much better! i will try and maintain that 6 then :D

I was just going to warn you of the same thing as Sue said - wondering if you'd seen my earlier post and maybe hadn't realised I'm type 2 and not on meds so it's safer to aim low. You've done really well and should be proud of your achievement because you've had to do all that injecting as well as reorganising what you eat! Well done!

Please don't be offended by what I say but your hba1c is very low for someone who is insulin dependant. I would take a guess that a lot of your daily bg levels are going somewhere between 4 and 7 or even lower and that although you may have decent hypo awareness now, you will find over the next year or so, that your hypo warning signs will start to change and you will only pick up them when your bg levels fall between 2 - 3mmol. As a consequence you will find yourself having to test your bg levels very frequently probably about 6-8 times a day just to keep yourself ok and out of hypo land. It will be similar to trying to walk on a thin tightrope which you could very easily fall off of.

I certainly would not want to get my hba1c any lower than 6.7 unless advised to by a consultant. Because of the way bolus/basal affects bg levels, many consultants are getting more and more concerned about hypoglycaemia and are now recommending insulin dependant diabetics to get their bg levels up a bit so that their hba1c is around the high 6's or low 7's.

hey iHs,
actually i really don't get many hypos, if i do they are only about a 3.8 and never in the twos! most of my levels are mostly 5 or 6, a few are on 4s but i also get some on 7s and a bit above, i sometimes get 8s. i really don't think my levels are too low but i will make sure i keep an eye out incase i do go low. thanks for your comment and i'll try harder to keep off the fours then :D
