HbA1c Results Time

After being diagnosed recently as having Type 2 diabetes I was asked for a blood sample to be sent for my HbA1c results. I was told that the results of this could take upto 8 weeks to come back. This seems like a long time - is this normal?
In the meantime I have been prescribed 2x500mg metformin per day.

That sounds like a long time to me. Mine takes a couple of days.
 
When I go to the clinic I get the results there and then
Is it your GP or the hospital the GP can take a bit longer but not 8 weeks ???
 
I go to my GP 7-10 days before my diabetic clinic at the hospital and have a blood test. The results are always in when I have my appointment.
 
When blood are sent to a lab I always get told to wait 5 days before ringing up for the results, a 8 week wait is ridiculous.
 
When I go to my local hospital for my blood tests my Dr surgery have the results the next day. That include my HbA1c test.
Can't see why it should take 8 weeks.
 
That was at the hospital.
I wasn't that impressed actually. They told me I needed to start metformin then discharged me without any prescription. I had to ask for it and they said "oh yes you need that don't you"!.
I was then asked to wait a few mins in the waiting room, only to be asked 40 mins later if I could come back in 2-3 hours as they hadn't even written my prescription out!
Fortunately my sister is a nurse on another ward there so she said she would pick it up when she finished. When she went 3 hours later - still no prescription written out and nobody seemed to know what was going on!
I've asked her if she can get my results tomorrow when she is back at work.
 
Mine take 2 days. The surgery sends the sample off to the lab the same day. The lab checks it and puts the results up on the computer within 24 hours.
Are you sure it was an HbA1c test?
 
If you get a printout of your result, it will show processing the next day at latest. Hence my comment ,when they tried that one on, that they needed to pension off their carrier tortoise for a pigeon :woot::woot:
