As I understand it, you've only just been diagnosed and haven't been on a special diet, medication or anything yet. In which case, you're hardly even diabetic, more like pre-diabetic (what used to be called borderline diabetic.) It was the world health organisation I think that classed over 6.5 as diabetic, and between 5.7 and 6.4 as "at risk" Can't find that, but here's a link to a site that suggests key authorities consider between 6.0 and 6.5 to be pre-diabetic:-
http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/predia ... -diagnosis
In fact, at your age (without being personal Sir!) your HbA1c isn't massively higher than you might expect of a non-diabetic. - HbA1c increases with age, with one study suggesting it could go up by 0.1 for every year over 60 i think.
Not suggesting that you're not a member of our illustrious club, just that you should be able to manage it very easily with a small change in your diet and lifestyle.
Good luck!
