Folks,

not sure about the rules on posting adverts, but there is a company in the UK which provide HBA1C testing at £16.59 a throw. You order online, then the lab send you a card on which you provide a couple of finger prick samples, send the card back in the post and your HBA1C results follow a few days later.

I currrently get 4 tests a year from NHS, but DN suggested my 3 monthly review may be pushed out to 6 months at next review. If this is the case, I will scream blue murder for my quarterly HBA1C test, but if they do push my HBA1C tests out to 6 months, I need to know I can get the tests done regardless.

Does anyone have any experience of this service?...Any views...?

Steve.

there's a machine made by Bayer, called" A1cNOW", which is sold freely in the USA, but not available yet here. I was thinking of importing one. It's reputedly accurate and not very expensive.

I saw this on Ebay for $115 + $42 shipping to the UK. However no mention of lancets/test strips etc.

Guys,

I have contacted the US seller of the A1C tester...

It is a disposable 10 test unit (10 tests then no further use - can not use new strips)... (Still a relatively good deal for 10 HBA1C tests)

.....also seller states they only sell to bona fide doctor's surgeries!!.

I just googled that kit - $30 is a really good deal as only £9.10 per test - a lot cheaper than it would cost to get a private test done in the UK. The problem is getting that kit in the UK plus I bet if they sell it here they will put a massive markup on it.

Here's a thread I saw about Americans who are using the selfchek kit... They seem quite happy with it...

I you test by post how long does the blood take before the test is done and wha effect will this have on the test? Is there some way one for one member who could buy a 10 test kit and then 10 members meet up and do their HBA1Cs together ? This would work out at around £6 each , would anyone like to try this ? How do we find forum members in our locale ? Could we get our GPs to offer this at cost as they would have plenty of people who would like to know . I had my first HBA1C in June and as a new diagnosed diabetic surely should have had a follow up one by now?

Hi Soundgen,

as most people do not enter location within their profile, doubt we could use the forum to locate members.

I was advised that from diagnosis, until you hit your steady state (Medication fixed and acceptable control for 6 months) reviews including HBA1C tests should be every 3 months, therafter every 6 months. So I was diagnosed and tested, 3 mopths later tested and Metformin reduced, hence next review 3 months, etc...
Once they move me out to a 6 month review, I will still insist on a 3 monthly HBA1C and blood lipid profile test. If results AOK - fine, if not then I will refer back to Diabetic team for a review.

Regards Steve.
