Hba1c testing frequency

Hello everyone,

Just wondering how regularly blood tests should be taken.

I was diagnosed t1 mid January with a Hba1c of 112 and a cholesterol reading of 8. At the time the gp sent me to A and E and fortunately I was able to see a diabetic consultant the same day who gave me testing and insulin instructions etc.

A few of days later I saw the nurse again, saw the gp a couple of weeks after for a chat. I've also had an eye screening, and had a letter back saying background retinopathy was found.

I seem to remember at diagnosis they said to come back in 3 months, but I was a bit tired at the time and there was a lot of other information to take in. Am I right in thinking this?

Hi @Frankly_Speaking_ ,

Your a1c number reflects your average glucose levels over the last 8 weeks (approx) so a 3 month appointment would not be abnormal.

in your early D days being seen more often is beneficial as it helps with establishing routine -- you may have to pester to get seen though ( stretched patient loads )

remember you are number 1 !!!!!!!

I haven't been in contact with the health care team since the first couple of days after diagnosis.

Bg levels have steadily improved and l have had no real need to see anyone. I have however seen the dentist and optician over the past few months, although I haven't had my feet looked at yet.

Do people make their own appointments?
 
For me, first line podiatry is given by the diabetes nurse at my GPs surgery.

In the first instance, I'd suggest asking your nurse. If they don't do it there, they might refer you somwhere.
