Hi. yes IF is key.. My last meal is 7pm and i wake up around 7pm and still my sugar level is around 16mmol. usually around 16-19mmol fasting after break-fast it will go up by 3-4mmols, and then, before my next meal i will still be around 20mmol and by the end of the day when i check before bed it is at around 17mmol. it has been similar for past few months or so. medications have been upped and appointment with endo has been made and even Insulin from my GP has been prescribed as well. although with insulin i have had experience with being on it for 6-12month a few years ago and it didn't do much for me other than bruise my stomach.. anyway.. i definitely do fasting even after breakfast my next meal will be many hours after and i drink plenty of fluids throughout the day, the only thing i haven't been able to do is cut out carbs entirely due to the fact nearly everything has carbs.. other than meat.. and eating only meat is not easy because of the costs and such but yes health is more important than cost and yes it is a challenge if you have diabetes and have to buy food and the cost of living and all but health should come first..Looking at your profile I take it you have been around on the forum long enough to know staying low carb helps. Are you having these numbers despite being on a low carb diet? Have you tried intermittent fasting? I ask this because the kind of numbers along with following all advise from doctors and being regular to gym was exactly the same situation I was facing back in Oct'20 and then I read the book from Dr. Jason Fung in desperation because I was being asked to consider insulin and then I decided to try IF and in 3 months my HbA1c came down from 99 to 39... so as far as I am concerned IF with low carb has been my saviour and has got me off medication completely... it isn't an easy lifestyle but I have gotten used to it and dare I say I even enjoy it now.
thank you i will try my very best.It must be so frustrating for you and I can sympathise with the high hba1. I thought I was being low carb but my result came back at 94! I was so upset but when I analysed my eating habits I knew where it came from. Overeating and not tracking my carbs, which I encourage you to do when trying to sort out your blood results. You only have to do this for a few weeks until you realise these sneaky little blighters get in everything. Even regular semi skimmed milk has quite a few carbs. I have 2 tablespoons of double cream in my coffee instead. Give yourself a months challenge - meals of protein plus leafy green veg. Fruit that ends in ‘……berries’ with full fat yogurt or cream. Eat the skin on chicken, cook fresh whenever possible. If you’re feeling peckish have hard boiled eggs ready in the fridge or eat a slice of cheese. Get an app that logs carbs and put everything you eat on there to see if you can identify what’s causing your raised blood glucose. Good luck and you can beat this
thank you.. i will look further into the low carb way of living and try and up my fasting - although i can fast for lets say 12-16 hours and i still will be around the morning level of 16-19mmol. so, i don't know why i am still elevated even whilst fasting.... once i even went 20 hours of course i drank plenty of water.. mehI am so sorry to hear of your struggles. Rise in sugar just with coffee and eggs is very puzzling because that combination does not have any carbs unless you add sugar to your coffee which am sure you don't.
Though, I will say this, if you follow alternate day fasting and switch to low carb food the cost of living isn't as bad as it originally sounds. I have now been on this diet for over 2.5 years and to be honest i think i have saved money in long run. This is because the satiety level is much higher with low carb diet so we eat less and with alternate day fasting you are already eating less...about 50% less compared to daily eating... so overall your consumption of yearly food will come down by about 60 to 70 percent by following low carb diet and Alternate day fasting with few prolonged fasting thrown in which can more than subsidise the higher cost of Ingredients for low carb diet such as chicken breasts, cheese, paneer, tofu, almond flour, erythritol etc.
Also worth reviewing your diet to see if there is anything in it you can classify as ultra processed food... say diet coke, breakfast cereals, protein bars, a lot of microwave meals from supermarkets have ultra processed additives too and such.... last two even if sugar free can in long run can cause damage to gut microbiome which isn't helpful.
I am sorry I can't give any useful suggestions but if you would like to see what I eat you can have a look at the pdf link in my signature or in the post on my profile. I hope that helps.
