T1 here, so I was on insulin throughout my pregnancies.
Well, both my children are in their twenties, so conception was a long time ago. I don't remember my precise hba1cs, somewhere in the 6 range (so probably 42 to 50), and they were happy with that. I did work hard to reduce my levels before pregnancy (and maintain them during).
They can also do a fructosamine test which averages out the last 2-3 weeks, which is useful during a pregnancy.
As a T2, are you on medication? Will they give you a freestyle libre so you can monitor your levels? (I am guessing you'd have to be pregnant to qualify, but if you've got the finances it might be worth self funding.) For me, more blood tests always improved my diabetic control, but as a T2 you presumably should improve control by eating less carbs.
And what hba1c are you starting from?
I understand your frustration, but at 26 you have plenty of biological time to get pregnant (unless you have a family history of early menopause) so it's probably worth taking the DN's advice and improving your levels before conception. But it does kind of depend on where you're starting from. If you're monitoring your levels yourself you'll know when they're in the right range rather than having to wait for another hba1c, though I think it is supposed to be best to be in range for a few months before conception....
Good luck.
