Hba1c is a blood test that is used to detect how much glucose you have in your blood. It’s the test they use to determine whether you are diabetic,
Under 41 is normal
42-47 is ore diabetic
48 over is diabetic

it usually covers a period of 8-12 weeks because that’s how often the red blood cells live.

I am a new type 2 diabetic. What does HbA1c mean?

Hi @WeeSub and welcome to the forum!

The HbA1c is a blood test which estimates your average blood sugar levels over the previous 8-12 weeks. It’s the main diagnostic test for diabetes.

In the UK, the threshold for diabetes is 48mmol/mol and above. 42-47 is pre-diabetes.

You may find the attached chart and link below helpful.

HbA1c is what’s known as glycated haemoglobin. This is something that’s made when the glucose in your body sticks to your red blood cells. If your body can’t use the sugar properly more of it sticks to your blood cells and builds up in your blood. Red blood cells are active for around 2-3 months. Hence it gives an estimate for the last 3 months

In short it’s a test to say if you are diabetic or not and how good/bad you’ve controlled it for the last 3 months
