Hi folks, I had my three monthly tests done at the hospital last Thursday. Went today for the results and they've returned at 6.3 :) which she said was excellent. Apart from my cholesterol being a little high everything alse seems fine. The nurse i spoke to said that they will be more than likely be putting me on Byetta, of which i know nothing about. It was actually 5 months since i last had my HBA1c done last time due to my doctors surgery not contacting me.

I have got to lose some weight though but at present i'm having pains in my feet and they're doing some investigations to find out why. Some parts of my feet are painful and some parts i have lost some feeling in them. Once they are sorted out I can start to do some training again.

Any info on the Byetta would be appreciated !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Regards

Hazey

3 monthly HYba1c? Youre getting priviledged treatment and offered Byetta with a 6.3%. your health care team are pure gold!!

Hi Hazey,
As Hana said, you are very lucky if they are actually offering Byetta to you - most people have to fight tooth and nail to get it. It is one of the newer treatments for type-2s and and is taken by injection twice a day, before breakfast and before your evening meal. Unlike most diabetes meds, Byetta works in a variety of ways:
- it triggers the pancreas to start producing insulin, which results in the release of a more appropriate amount of insulin that helps lower the rise in blood sugar from eating
- it stops the pancreas from releasing glucagon in response to eating, which helps stop the liver from overproducing sugar when it is not needed
- it slows down the rate at which food passes through the digestive system, which in turn helps to slow down the rate at which carbohydrates convert into blood sugar
- it reduces appetite, so weight loss is a very common side effect (without really trying!)
- it reduces liver fat content, which helps to improve cholesterol levels.

I was one of the first in the UK on Byetta and have been on it for 14 months now. There is quite a bit about it in various threads dotted around the forum - just look out for any thread with the word "Byetta" in the title and have a good read. I think what has been posted in the past will probably answer any questions you might have, but if not then please fire away.

Hi, thanks for the replies. hanadr it's not that my medical team are pure gold it's that i've just started at the hospital after all the **** i've had off my GP over the past months it truly is a breathe of fresh air to be treated like a real person again. Dennis, thanks for the info it sounds like it's the bees knees and at present i could do with something to help with my weight as my feet as so bad at present and i'm finding it so difficult to do any kind of exercise.

Regards

Ian

Dead right Skater - who would ever have thought that such an ugly looking lizard, and with a poisonous bite to boot, would prove to be the source for one of the most effective diabetes meds yet discovered!
