Hi been type one since a week before easter last year. Had first hba1c result since diagnosis of 56. My doctor told me this as I had an appointment for something unrelated, but its a few weeks until I see the diabetic nurse whose opinion on diabetes I have faith in. Is this a good result or bad?

It works out at 7.3% which for someone who has only had diabetes a year isn't too bad, they want people to be below 48mmol/mol which is 6.5% so there is room for a little improvement but don't worry too much about it, see what your DSN says and if you've not done a carb counting course such as DAFNE ask them to put your name down.
