hi guys , a few months ago my hba1c was 5.7 , to get it lower I went on a no carb no sugar diet, lost a vast amount of weight , I was only a size 12 went to a size 6-8, look terrible, feel more un healthy then I ever did but when I had my hba1c tested at the beginning of this month I was shocked to find out that my hba1c was 6.5. I can't believe it, no carbs at all and no sugar, just fat and protein... Anybody know why this is? Thank you . I am type 2

You may not be a Type 2. I would post again on one of the Discussion forums where you may get more help.

Hi @Sue 571 ,

I don't really understand what's going on here. In the UK we diagnose diabetes when the patient presents with an hba1c of 6.5% or higher. If you were at 5.7% then why are you trying to lower it? That is within the non-diabetic range.

Without carbs, your body will adjust to breaking down protein and fats into glucose to give you energy to complete everyday tasks. So it does also depend on the quantity of food you are eating.

When you go very low carb your body goes into a state of physiological insulin resistance. Basically it saves all glucose for important functions and fat fuels your muscles and other cells. Now if you havent been eating enough fat and been consuming protein by the bucket (sorry for the expression) you will be converting this into glucose instead. The body is a very clever organism. However at 5.7% you are not diabetic and 6.5% is the insulin resistance caused by extremely low carb. Not an issue you just need to understand the origin of the insulin resistance.
