Please advise.

I am currently 4 weeks pregnant and my Hbac1 levels are at 17%. I'm a type 2 diabetic insulin controlled and it is out of control. Does anyone know what the chances are of a healthy pregnancy. What are the chances of my baby being malformed or risks to myself?

Hi, please try not to worry too much yes that is far too high but if you get it down pronto then you may be ok. I had hba1c of 9.6% at five weeks pregnant, but got it down to below 6 within a few weeks and stayed there and so far baby seems fine io'm 27 weeks

The bad news is that there is a higher correlation between problems with the baby and high HBa1c however it is by no means definite, I found some research when I was expecting will try and find it again and post it up. However in this research some of the mothers with low Hba1cs had problems and some with high hba1cs were fine, I think i remember that the chance of a problem arising with a hba1c over ten was around 37% which means that of those mothers with a hba1c over ten then 63% had no problems.

Are you under the care of a specialist midwife? If not go to your doctor and get referred to antenatal straight away they should see you pretty soon. Are you on insulin? They will probably put you on insulin pretty quick, you will need to test around 8-10 times per day and just match your insulin to your food. I am on novorapid and lantus and can still eat 'normal' food I just try to inject the exact right amount of insulin to clean the excess sugar out of my blood but I have done dafne, not sure if you've done that or not.

All you can do now is do your best, take care :D

Thank you for your help. Yes i am on insuline. I'm on insulatard and novorapid. this is my 3rd pregnancy and was diagnosed diabetic after my first who is now 6. I seen my diabetic specialoist nurse this morning who sent me straight to midwife and I have app with specialist on Friday. Hope you get through yours fine and once again thanks for your help :P
