HBCa1 level of 46 3 months after baby

Hi, I had a baby 3 month ago, for the 2nd time I suffered GD throughout my pregnancy. I was on fast acting insulin during the day and slow release at night.

On tuesday I had my post natal HBCa1 blood test which has come back at 46. Now I know this isn't soaring (my mum's is 87!) but as someone who is non diabetic, should I be concerned?

I only spoke to the receptionist about these results as I have my flu jab tonight so will see the doctor then but my doctor is very laid back and just says everything is fine and to wait and see.....

Advice needed please, would this level suggest I am diabetic or just at risk? I check my own blood sugar levels and first tthing in the morning they are usually between 6.1 and 7.4.
 
You're slightly on the high side for a non-diabetic, but as you say, it's not horrendous. There's various debates going on in medical literature about how to define diabetes and whether it should be done on an HbA1c test, but some doctors would define you as diabetic with that HbA1c. Others would say, borderline/at risk. Certainly something to keep an eye on, but not something to be scared about, and not something that would require insulin again - you should be able to manage it with diet. I'm not a doc though so this is only educated guessing.
 
Hi, thanks for your reply. Its actually at the same level as when they started me on my insulin which is a bit strange but I guess that was more for the safety of the baby. Fingers crossed doc will address it tonight, I'd sooner they kept their eye on it than just ignore it!

also I think in pregnancy you can end up needing quite a lot of insulin, while your body is likely to be a bit more stable after the pregnancy hormones have subsided a bit. Good luck. I hope your doc gives your the support and help you need.
