HCL System and low carbing

Hello,

I’m due to start the Omnipod HCL and would like to continue low carbing whilst I’m on it.

Does anyone have any views on that? Are there any issues in running an HCL system on less than thirty carbs a day?

Thanks

H

Hi,

Unfortunately your post is unreadable likely due to the way in which you have accessed the forum to post. I’d recommend editing your post on a web browser so people are able to understand what your post is asking and provide replies.

Hi,

I do 30g to 40g a day (as I can't handle a large quantity of carbs) on the Medtronic 780G HCL and have had few problems.

Is this the first time you have been on a pump? The reason I'm asking is that the insulin sensitivity and carb ratios have to be set up on the pump, which can impact your BG levels - so do have some fast acting carbs to hand.

As the algorithms learn about you your control will get better.

Hi,

Yes, it is my first time on a pump. I have now just started and I guess it is in a settling in mode.

The pump team at the hospital were saying I had to have at least 60 grams of carbs a day. Which I'm just going to ignore, they also didn't seem comfortable with the notion of dietary ketosis; any ketosis is bad according to the person I spoke to. I'm going to ignore that as well!

Just working out the insulin ratios and tweaking it as I go.

I'm on the same amount of carbs as you.

It's all looking good so far.

Many thanks

Once everything has settled down you'll definitely feel the benefit of HCL - it just takes a while, especially with adjusting the settings (insulin sensitivity, activate insulin time, carb ratios and BG target) - they probably told you this already but don't be tempted to adjust more than one setting at a time.

You'll also learn more how certain foods effect your BG as well but the pump is great at compensating on over or under estimation of carbs.
